I received an emergency call for a 2024 Chevrolet Express 2500 belonging to an electrical and energy company. Their crew was working out of town when their van developed charging-system issues, leaving them stranded in Sherman, TX.

🔧 Here’s what I took care of:

✅ Complete battery and charging-system diagnostics

✅ Identified a generator F-terminal circuit fault (P0622)

✅ Replaced the failing alternator

It’s that time of year again! As temperatures start dropping, weak batteries start showing their age, and the last thing you want is to walk outside on a cold morning to a vehicle that won’t start!

I’ve been busy replacing batteries on everything from personal vehicles to work trucks and commercial fleet vehicles lately!

❄️ WHY DOES COLD WEATHER KILL BATTERIES?

Cold temperatures reduce a battery’s ability to deliver power, while your engine requires more power to start. A battery that worked perfectly fine all summer might leave you stranded once temperatures start dropping!

✅ A FEW TIPS TO HELP PREVENT A DEAD BATTERY:

🔋 Don’t let your vehicle sit too long! If you don’t drive it regularly, take it for a good 20–30 minute drive periodically, or consider using a battery maintainer. Simply starting it for a few minutes isn’t enough!

🔋 Check your battery’s age! Most car batteries last around 3–5 years. If yours is getting up there in age, it’s worth having it tested before winter.

🔋 Keep your terminals clean! Corrosion and loose connections can cause starting problems even with a healthy battery.

🔋 Pay attention to slow starts! If your engine is cranking slower than usual, don’t wait until it stops starting altogether.

🔋 Get your battery and charging system tested! A simple test now could save you from being stranded later.

I recently headed out to diagnose this beautiful 2022 GMC Yukon Denali 6.2L after the customer noticed the cooling fans running longer than usual after shutting off the engine.

After running diagnostics, monitoring engine temperatures, and testing the cooling system, I found the coolant level was low!

This Jeep Grand Cherokee needed some attention to its steering, drivetrain, and braking system, so I headed out to the customer’s location to get everything taken care of! Imagine getting off work and your car is safe and drivable and you didn’t mess up your whole day to get your car repaired!

🔧 Repairs Completed:

✅ Replaced the steering linkage to address worn steering components and improve handling.

✅ Replaced the worn and dry rotted transmission output shaft seal to stop a transmission fluid from leaking and slinging everywhere.

✅ Replaced the rear transmission mount to provide better drivetrain support and reduce unwanted movement.

✅ Replaced the rear brake pads and rotors to restore reliable braking performance.

This Ford F-150 received some much-needed attention with an extensive suspension, steering, and brake overhaul! 💪

After years of wear and tear, suspension and steering components can develop excessive play, affect handling, and cause uneven tire wear.

🚨 SHREDDED BELT LEAVES FORD E-350 BOX TRUCK DOWN! 🔧🚚

Another commercial vehicle back on the road thanks to Shift Happens Mobile Mechanic!

I responded to a customer with a Ford E-350 box truck that wouldn’t stay running.

After inspecting the vehicle, I discovered multiple issues:

🔧 Battery completely discharged – Testing revealed the battery had only 1.4 volts!

🔧 Severely damaged serpentine belt – The old belt had completely shredded, wrapping itself around multiple engine components and pulleys.

🔧 Charging system compromised – With the belt destroyed, the alternator could no longer be driven to maintain battery voltage.

I removed the tangled remains of the old belt, installed a new serpentine belt, and replaced the battery to get this box truck back in service! 💪

Had the opportunity to work on this beautiful 1978 Chevrolet Corvette C3 and get its fuel system squared away right at the customer’s location.

This one received:

⛽ New fuel tank
🔧 New fuel hoses
⚙️ Ignition timing adjustment
✅ Fuel system reassembled and checked for proper operation

2015 FORD F-150 — BATTERY DIAG + REAR BRAKES 🔧

We came to this F-150 after the customer was told by the dealership that it needed an alternator because the truck wouldn’t start.

After testing the charging and starting system, we found the alternator wasn’t the problem — the battery was. A new battery got the truck starting like it should without replacing parts it didn’t need. 💪

While we were there, we also took care of the rear brake pads. The old pads were worn down and ready for replacement, so we installed a fresh set, cleaned and lubricated the necessary contact points and slide pins, and got everything back together.

Sometimes a proper diagnosis can save you from spending money on parts you don’t need.
