Golf Cart Tip: What Is a Relay, and When Do You Need One?

After working on a customer’s golf cart, it got me thinking that not everyone knows what a relay is or when they might need one.

A relay is an electrically controlled switch that allows a low-current signal to control a higher-current circuit. They’re commonly used in golf cart electrical systems for things like lights, accessories, and other electrical components.

If you’re installing or replacing a relay, **follow the wiring diagram**. It will show you which terminals connect where so you can get it wired correctly.

Having electrical issues with your golf cart accessories?

We often see carts come in with voltage drains when the cart is turned off or radios and other accessories that stay powered even after the key is turned off.

A simple solution is to properly key-switch your accessories using a 48V solenoid.

The basic idea is simple:

The key switch sends a small 48V signal to the solenoid.

When the key is turned on, the solenoid allows the main 48V power to flow to the voltage converter.

The voltage converter then supplies 12V power to your accessories.

When you turn the key off, the solenoid opens and cuts power to the converter — shutting your accessories down with it.

It’s a simple, affordable way to properly key-switch 12V accessories on a 48V golf cart and can help prevent unnecessary battery drain.
