Here’s something most drivers don’t realize...those wet leaves on the road can be as slippery as ice.

Leaves have a waxy coating that keeps water sitting on top, creating a slick film between your tires and the pavement. A car going 40 mph needs about 80 feet to stop on a dry road but roughly 250 feet on wet leaves. That’s more than three times the distance. Leaves can also hide lane lines, potholes, and curbs.

Slow down, leave extra space, and avoid sudden braking on leaf-covered roads. Good tire tread helps too, because it channels water away.

The clocks fall back this Sunday, November 1. Is your car ready for the dark? Cloudy, yellowed headlights can output as little as 20% of the light of new ones.

Sunlight slowly damages the protective coating on plastic headlight lenses, and it happens so gradually that most people don’t notice. Restoring the lenses can bring back much of the light output, and replacing them restores it fully.

Most people wait for the first snowflake to think about winter tires. But the number that matters is 45°F, not 32°F.

Once temperatures drop below about 45 degrees, the rubber in all-season tires starts to stiffen. That means less grip, even on dry pavement with no snow in sight. Winter tires use a special compound that stays flexible in the cold, so they grip better.

In NH, the cold mornings are here now, well before the first snowstorm. Look for the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol on the sidewall. It means the tire is rated for severe snow.

That pothole you just hit? It might have done more damage than you think and you won't feel it right away.

Hitting a pothole incorrectly can damage the structural parts of your tire, creating a bubble or gash in the sidewall and those don't always show up until the tire fails at highway speed. Beyond tires, potholes can knock your wheels out of alignment, bend rims, and damage your suspension; all things that get worse (and more expensive) the longer they go unchecked.
