Ok, I guess the “estimate” wasn’t low!

Suspect this would have been higher with 1. Le Mans history, and 2. Original, and iconic, Gr4 flares.

Either way, well bought!

MegaBuck Pantera – Part 5, Final Assembly and the “Reveal”

1982 - the culmination of a multi-year project to build the “Ultimate GT Automobile” was undergoing final assembly. This was the equivalent of what today would be called a “Hypercar” and far exceeded any other Pantera build at the time.

Every part of the car, appropriately named "Mega Buck", was engineered and fabricated to the latest state-of-the-art aerospace and automotive standards. And many components and systems (e.g. the Inconel exhaust) were the first of their kind.

As documented in prior articles, there were no fewer than (27) people working on the car to make the final preparations for Mega Buck's reveal at the 1982 Newporter Invitational Concours d’Elegance. Unfortunately, the effort came up a bit short and the car rolled onto the show lawn without its chome-moly driveshafts.

But even in its ‘incomplete’ form, I still recall seeing this car at the Newporter. It re-set the bar on what had been attempted and achieved on the Pantera platform in 1982 … and in many ways, I think, still does!

Chassis 2858 is the second of the six original Group 4 Panteras completed by De Tomaso in April 1972 and homologated as the "GT4" Pantera. Further demand led to the build of eight additional cars spec'ed as "Gruppo 4".

Shown here with an "estimated value of €300,000-€350,000 (approximately $350,000-$410,000 USD)", seems conservative for one of only (14) factory built Group 4 race cars. But scheduled to sell at the RM Sotheby's auction in Paris later this month. So we'll see!

Monza. Imola. Florio. Those are just some of the storied events this De Tomaso Pantera competed in.

Built by Mike Cook and Lee Mueller to SCCA Super Production specs in 1981, chassis 3109 shows what was possible using state-of-the-art technology at that time. This was built to "professional" level standards but privately funded by then POCA president, Bob Cleaves. Unfortunately it had a limited racing career and was retired shortly after winning at a Riverside Raceway SCCA event. I took these pics in 1989 at Riverside Raceway. (And yes, those are actual ‘phone booths’ in the last pic, next to the Hall Pantera canopy. Era of no cell phones or social media – just uninterrupted track time!)
