FLOW NUMBERS ARENâT THE WHOLE STORY! đ„
This set of Yamaha outboard injectors was just serviced by another shop last week.
The customerâs complaint was simple: the engine would idle okay, but it struggled to get on plane, wouldnât turn more than 4,300 RPM, and the boat was way down on MPH. The other shop told him the injectors all flowed the same and were good to go. He got home, put everything back together, took the boat out⊠GUESS WHAT? SAME PROBLEM.
Thatâs where looking beyond the flow numbers matters. Take a close look at Injector #2 and its spray pattern. The wide, spread-out stream is the problem. Instead of delivering a proper, controlled spray into the intake runner, the fuel is being directed toward the intake runner wall. An injector can show acceptable flow on a machine and still have a spray pattern that tells a completely different story. We went through the entire set, properly cleaned the injectors, replaced the internal filters, and tested them again. The result? They came back performing like they should.
The customer picked them up from us yesterday afternoon, took the boat out today, and called us afterward to say: âThe boat runs like it did when it was new.â Thatâs what we like to hear! đȘ
At the end of the day, just because someone has a machine to clean fuel injectors doesnât necessarily mean they know how to properly diagnose and service them. Flow rate matters. Spray pattern matters.
Atomization matters. Knowing what youâre looking at matters. Do your research before choosing an injector service shop. Because sometimes saving a few dollars the first time means paying to have the job done twice.
