Buc-ee’s founder Arch “Beaver” Aplin III said at the recent grand opening of the company’s first Arkansas location: “We’re building in a lot of places. But when you find a conservative, business-friendly state with a phenomenal workforce, it makes a difference. And I’m starting to realize life is too short to try to build in places that people don’t appreciate what you’re bringing.”

The Dallas Police Department has received a certified notice from Dallas County regarding the termination of the current interlocal agreement for the Dallas County Highway Traffic Program. According to the notice, the agreement will terminate effective August 28, 2026.

The agreement, which began October 1, 2025, provided approximately $1.2 million in funding for the Dallas County Sheriff's Office to provide freeway traffic enforcement and crash response services within the City of Dallas.

While we have appreciated our partnership with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office, the Dallas Police Department has been proactively planning for this transition for several months as part of our ongoing efforts to improve operational efficiency, maximize available resources, and enhance public safety.

Beginning in August, the Dallas Police Department will expand its Traffic Unit to assume responsibility for freeway traffic enforcement, High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lane enforcement, and crash investigations within the City of Dallas. This transition will improve response times, ensure crashes are investigated by traffic investigators, strengthen enforcement of HOV lane regulations to promote safer and more efficient traffic flow, and reduce the need to divert patrol officers from responding to calls for service. Keeping patrol officers available for emergency calls while dedicated Traffic Unit personnel respond to freeway incidents allows the Department to better serve the community.

"This transition reflects the way we are continuously evaluating how we deploy our resources to best serve the people of Dallas," said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. "Expanding our Traffic Unit allows us to provide faster, more specialized response to traffic incidents, assume responsibility for HOV lane enforcement, and keep patrol officers focused on responding to calls for service. It's an investment in both public safety and operational efficiency that ultimately enhances the level of service our community expects and deserves."

The Dallas Police Department remains committed to working collaboratively with all our regional law enforcement partners and appreciates the partnership we have shared with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office. Our priority remains providing exceptional public safety services to the residents and visitors of Dallas.
