JGTC GT500 R34 GT-R: RB26 Engine and Transmission Details

The Nissan Skyline GT-R is already one of the most studied Japanese performance cars ever built, but the JGTC GT500 R34 GT-R takes that obsession to another level. These were not street cars with cages. They were full race cars built for Japan’s top-level grand touring series, using the shape and legend of the R34 GT-R as a starting point, then pushing the engine placement, driveline, aero, suspension, and fabrication into a completely different world.

I have had these pictures for many years. Speedconcepts in Wisconsin bought a few ex-JGTC GT500 R34 race cars, including RB26-powered cars and a later VR30-powered car. While they were preparing the cars for historic racing, they sent me a few pictures of the engine, transmission, collector, turbo system, and chassis layout. There is a lot of interesting stuff here, especially if you are used to looking at normal R32, R33, and R34 GT-R engine bays.

This 1991 Nissan Skyline GT-R is a very clean R32 finished in KH2 Gunmetallic Grey with only 49,363 km / 30,672 original miles. Powered by the legendary RB26DETT twin-turbo inline-six and paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, this right-hand-drive GT-R keeps the classic R32 formula simple and honest.

The car presents extremely well, including a notably clean dark interior. Many R32 interiors fade toward blue from years of sun exposure, but this example has retained a much nicer, darker appearance. The car is lightly modified with Tein coilovers and has just received a long list of maintenance and service, including engine oil, transmission oil, differential oils, transfer case fluid, coolant, brake and clutch fluid, battery, spark plugs, fuel filter, air cleaner, rocker cover gasket, front upper arms, brake rotors, and brake pads.

A clean, low-mileage R32 GT-R in Gunmetallic Grey is getting harder to find, especially one that has been serviced and is already here in Cypress, California.
