Fordyce Axle & Fabrication

Fordyce Axle & Fabrication At Fordyce Axle & Fabrication, we build and install custom axles, install gears, lockers, suspension We don't set pinion rotating torque "by feel"; we measure.

We are a family owned & operated, State-licensed business that has enjoyed 9-years of success building custom axles and installing gears for customers and other auto shops in the Sacramento area. We still provide service for many of our customers there, however, in 2014, we moved our business to Cottonwood, CA to be closer to friends & family. In 2015, we changed our name from J4 Axle & Gear to Fo

rdyce Axle & Fabrication in honor of our favorite trail. We install gears, lockers, steering, suspensions, disk brakes, etc., and we build custom axles for primarily for 4x4s; however, we occasionally build them for hot-rods, daily drivers and even the occasional heavy-equipment axle. We do everything axle: narrow housing widths, axle truing, differential shaves, cut & turns, disk brake upgrades, and the absolute best ring & pinion installs physically/mathematically possible. We use a number of specialized, and often custom made, axle-specific tools that allow us to set up gears to 0.001" of specs. We never use the old shims to guess at pinion depth; we measure. We don't guess at backlash; we measure. And we don't depend solely on a gear tooth pattern in paint; we confirm a perfect gear tooth contact between the ring and pinion using a fiber-optic camera. Sure, we could install gears much faster if we cut corners, but we pride ourselves on taking the time to make sure your axle is set up to the tighter end of specs. "Good enough" is never something you'll hear from one of our employees. We also document your axle's specs so you'll know just how well it is set up. Because we keep our overhead low, we are not driven by quantity. When your vehicle is on our lift, or your axle is on our rack, it is the only job on our mind. We also install both retail and custom suspension systems, steering components, bumpers, rock rails, roll cages, exhaust routing, etc. We have the ability to fabricate many parts as well. We are an authorized dealer for Rubicon Express, Fabtech, RockKrawler, Skyjacker, ARB, Eaton (Detroit), E-Locker, OX, Alloy USA, Superior, Nitro, G2, Revolution, Nitro, Sierra Gear, Yukon, Ruffstuff Specialties, WFO Concepts, Poison Spyder Customs, PSC Steering, JKS, ARTEC, and many, many more. We keep our prices low by not having a showroom full of parts; however, our distributors usually have your parts here within days of your order, often the next day. Even better, the only profit we charge on parts is 5% above our wholesale cost for everyone, 3% for local club members, and no markup for members of Cal-4Wheel and the Blue Ribbon Coalition (because they do so much to keep our trails open), which insures that you'll get the best prices available. For the parts we don't sell and the work we don't perform, we are happy to recommend local businesses that have proven themselves to do quality work with great customer service. Our labor cost is significantly less than our competitors'. We have no shop rent, as our shop is located at our house. Our secret is simple: We make our living by charging our customers a fair price for labor and very little markup on parts; all while providing the highest-quality work available. You can pay more, but it is simply not possible to get a better install. We encourage you to shop around for prices and ask questions about what tools other companies use during gear installs and why (or more importantly, why not). Please feel free to contact our customers as well, to see what they have say about our work. Our business has been built over the years on the complete satisfaction of one customer at a time. We love to talk about 4-wheeling and off-road vehicles. Give us a call and let's discuss your project vehicle, whether it is already on the rocks, if it's just in the dreaming or planning stage, or if you're new to the sport and just want some help getting started. If we can help guide you in the right direction, we will. We are open to the public Thursday-Saturday, and anytime via phone to discuss your needs. Thanks for visiting and please tell your friends about us and "Like" us on Facebook. Word of mouth is critical to our business and we appreciate your referrals. Thanks!

Our new Summer employee using the lathe to bring some locker parts into spec. He did an awesome job! It is sure nice having three people working instead of just two (although with all the work Jason Patton has been doing around here, he should count as part of the crew).

We are now a dealer for TNT Customs. If you need a great suspension (we run their long-arm kit on our XJ and it outwheels every other Jeep we own), tube fenders, rock sliders, or anything else they make, we can not only get them for you, but at an incredible discount. Thanks!

If anyone wants a set of 1-tons for their rigs, we have a number of sets of high-pinion, front Dana-60's with matching Sterling 10.5's from Ford Super Dutys on their way here. These have a 8 x 170mm lug pattern. We are tooling up to be able to convert them to any lug pattern desired.

The high-pinion Dana-60's are much stronger, as they run on the stronger, drive side of the gears. They also get your driveline further up out of harm's way. The HD unit bearings are incredibly stout, especially compared to the Jeep versions, which is why companies like Dynatrac and Spidertrax are using them on their custom axles. If you opt to swap in newer unit bearings with tone rings, your JK's front wheel speed sensors can be made to work with them. We can narrow these to any width desired and install any gear ratio, lockers and/or locking hubs so you can disengage them for free-wheeling, improved mileage on the road; install 35-spline outer chromoly shafts, new brackets, or just about anything you want so you (or we) can swap them into your rig easily. All of the front Dana 60's are missing their axle shafts, as they were scavenged before we bought them, but we can get replacements at our wholesale cost (we sell all parts at wholesale with no dealer markup.

The rears have 35-spline, 1.5" axle shafts and 10.5" ring gears (the same as a 14-bolt or Dana-70). I believe that most still have disk brakes on them, but I'll have to check. The price for a front and rear pair of these axles before we advertise them is $1,000 per pair. This is a steal, as the front 60's often cost $1,200 alone.

We also have a number of 14-bolt rear ends available. These are one of our favorite rear axles due to their stout size, 1.5" axle shafts and third pinion (straddle) bearing that helps prevent gear deflection under heavy loads. These have an 8 x 6.5" lug pattern. We can shave these without machining the ring gear for approximately 1" more ground clearance than a rear Dana-60. These are complete with axle shafts. We can also make them any width you want, convert them to disk brakes, install any gear ratio, lockers, or brackets that you need to make these fit your vehicle. We can also convert these to front axles if you need an incredibly strong front axle. Price before we advertise them is $300 each.

Please contact us to order your set. We can be reached here on Facebook, by email at [email protected], or by text or phone at (530) 300-8000 (we get terrible reception in the shop, so please leave a message or text). Free local pickup in Cottonwood, CA, or we can ship freight at your expense.

Thanks!

Kevin

We've been so busy that I've neglected putting up any pics for a while (not that we're complaining about being busy). Here are some pics of Shawn Plummer's Jeep. Shawn is a Fire Fighter for the City of Redding and a volunteer for Cottonwood. Despite him being a fireman (cop/fireman joke), he quickly went from being a customer to a good friend. He is brand new to wheeling, so I'm hoping he'll meet some locals and club members and get some trail miles under his saddle. Shawn's Jeep started as a bone-stock, 1997, Jeep TJ Sport. We built a custom Ford 8.8 rear axle complete with disk brakes, an Artek truss and HD brackets, 4.56 gears with new bearings and seals, made the TJ's emergency brake work with the new axle and re-routed the exhaust. We also re-geared the front axle, added all new bearings and seals, replaced a worn unit bearing, and replaced the thin, stock steering linkage with the incredibly-strong Currie Curectlink steering linkage. Shawn had a new Rough Country lift kit that we installed as well. RC is not our favorite brand and like usual, we encountered some obstacles (like the front and rear springs having over 2" different lift), but we worked things out and it now sits and handles great. "530 Tire" in Anderson installed 15" black steel ProComp wheels and 35" Cooper STT Pro Tires at a great price. We've run Cooper STT's for years on two of our personal rigs and we've always liked their long-wearing characteristics and affordable price. We were really blown away with the new tread pattern as it is similar to the Pitbull Rockers. I read in JP that Cooper increased the strength of the side walls too this year. Shawn's future plans are to replace his steering box, upgrade his brake booster, add rocker guards, bumpers and a tire swing; and if we can talk him into it, a family cage and lockers. .Please help us welcome Shawn to the world of wheeling. He is a super nice guy who has the wheeling bug badly.

In addition to the many other brands we are an authorized dealer for, we are now an authorized dealer for OMIX ADA, Rugged Ridge, Outland Automotive, Alloy USA, Warrior Products, Skyjacker and many more. This has added over 10,000 products to our line. OMIX ADA makes almost any stock/ OE part you can think of. Rugged Ridge makes many aftermarket Jeep products, etc. If you can find a Jeep or 4x4 product in any catalog, chances are we can sell it to you for less. Our website is under construction but will provide access to most of the parts we carry. We'd be grateful if you'll give us the first chance at saving you money. Thanks! Tasha & Kevin

This is a monster F-250 on 44" Irok tires that we recently re-geared and installed a Detroit Locker. Because of the size alone, this took us a bit longer than normal to complete. In fact, it was too wide to fit between the lift posts. Very cool rig though. Not many people would be willing to dedicate a 7.3L diesel as an offroad-only rig. Looking forward to building a bed, exo-skeleton and rock sliders.

Here's a shot of Dennison Precision Machine boring the spindles on a 30-spline Dana-60 to 35-spline. We have one of the Yukon spindle boring tools, but overall, the mill does a much more precise job and it is WAAAAAAY faster. New chromoly Revolution 35-spline axle shafts cost right around $260 (for both shafts), so it is an affordable and worthwhile upgrade.

It's been a while since we've posted any pics of vehicles we've been working on, so here are a couple. We installed a Detroit Truetrac posi into this '55 Chevy, and while we were in there, we upgraded the axle shafts from 28-spline to 31-spline chromoly. The owner didn't need new gears, but Tasha tore them down anyway and set them up properly as they were way out of spec. Looking forward to seeing this beauty at Cool April Nights.
