2016 A3 came in recently for diagnosis of a ticking noise from the cylinder head when the engine was fully warmed up. A dealership had recently stated the intake cam phaser was the culprit, and quoted the customer over $6k for cam replacement. After carrying out our own diagnosis we found that the oil control valve (aka spool valve) in the intake cam had failed. After replacement the noise was no longer present and the customer was back on the road, with a much smaller bill than anticipated. Test, don’t guess, kids.
