A sadistic race for the most foolish of masochists, this one will test you physically of course, but it is so easy to call it quits and not obtain the mystery medal.

Out today:

Ma*****st,

Recently there was news of the hottest air temperatures globally. Some of you are thinking that you will run this marathon in August. Some know that you will suffer. All of this information combines to become an almost laughable (yet pitiful) bit of cognitive dissonance. It is cute.

Plan on packet pickup being on Saturday at a place where you can enjoy a beer. It may be your last night to enjoy one of those. In the past, packet pickup has occurred at Red Silo in COOKeville. It is downtown and has sundry beers. Some of the past people seem to like it. I am not sure of the time. I may let you know later.

I thought about upping the ante and having the race start at 11:00, but I figured too many people would enjoy that too much. Start will be at 7:00 Sunday (180 CC Camp Rd). You will attempt the five figure-8 loops in the SUN that SUNday. It will be fun. Your people can be at the center of the loop and see you every 2.5 miles or so. You may want to substitute your people for your liquids. Either way, that should feel welcoming when you circle back to the start/finish area.

Some of you are attempting your first marathon. I am surprised every year by the number of people doing this as their first marathon. At least you will have experienced people out on the course with you. For some reason, several of these veterans decide to return every year. Every once and a while someone will be smart and not come back.

If you haven't done so yet, get your things in order: cemetary plots, wills, do not resuscitate... those types of things. Enjoy life. Forgo the training now. Even if you are planning on a few 20-mile long runs, you will still be suffering come Aug 6th.

There are still spots open. If you have a nemesis who runs, invite them to sign up. We can see who will get the finisher's "medal" first.

-The Sadist.

Shorts order goes in next Friday (6/25) to allow for time for embroidery. Running this sucks enough. Not receiving shorts for the run sucks more.

The Ides of March are upon you. The waiver is ready and should be posted soon. The ruler of Rome took some 23 stabs - 3.2 miles short of the miles you think you want to complete.

Ma*****st,

Yesterday an email went out from the acting superintendent of schools for Putnam County, TN. The first day of school is August 3rd. That means that all corpses will need to be removed from the parking lot outside Cane Creek Elementary School - the parking lot that you will be blessed to run through some five times on August 2nd. Please be mindful of removing the corpses from school property, for those kids have already been through a lot. No need to make their first day back that scarring.

Yes, the Blister is still able to be held in person. As with everything else in 2020, it will not be the same. It will most likely be worse. While suffering and stupidity are both involved with this race, I want to make sure that the spread of any infectious disease will be mitigated while still having the "race" occur. There will be a few changes to accomplish this:

- Staggered start times in order to help assure social distancing. People will be 2-3 minutes apart starting at 6 AM. If you want to start with another person because you are scared of the course, you can. No more than three people can start at a time though.- Groups of no more than four people on the course in order to assure safe passing.
- Be safe when passing others on the course; please pass on the left. You will need to announce that you are about to pass in order to give appropriate time for the other person to fully move to the right and you to move to the left.
- Please stay to the right of the trail on the areas where people are going both ways. (This is the spectator area and the way out to the school parking lot.)
-There will be no main aid station; however, you may bring a cooler and whatever else you will need. These can be placed on the course - probably most people will place them in the middle of the figure eight as has been done in the past. You will need to be able to complete the race in a self-sustained way. The race will not be providing water coolers on the course or frozen water bottles as was done in the past. Even with keeping with the theme of the race, I do not feel like I can recruit volunteers or ask that people commonly share a cooler.
-Spectators can still come and participate in heckling. Encourage anyone attending with you and not running to be mindful of the runners and social distance. Remember the course is not closed to the public though.

There is another option. If you want to take the option of a virtual marathon, please email me as soon as you can (so I can plan out start times). This will mean that you will run 26.2 miles on Sunday August 2nd. The run cannot be started until the sun rises and must be finished before the sun sets. Any run will need to be recorded on GPS with the time and day. Virtual races are not eligible for prize money, however. After confirmation of completion, I'll mail your swag to you (shorts too if you signed up in time).

Official emails went out today. If you didn't get one, consider yourself officially lucky.

Just when you didn't think 2020 could get worse, there is the BitS.

06/18/2020

Just so you know, you have something else to dread in 2020:
The Blister in the Sun will occur in the same place it always has occurred on that first Sunday in August, as it has for the 10 previous years.

-The Sadist

I am postponing ordering shorts until after July 1st so that more people can get the Blister Swag that they have longed to suffer for. Entries this year are all online as noted in an earlier post.

Ma*****st, Former Ma*****st, or Person once Entertaining the Idea of Masochism on the first Sunday in August:

When you think things aren't going to get any worse, you receive this cursed email to confirm that if the pandemic ebbs by the first Sunday in August, this stupid hot hilly run in the park will occur. If you do survive these times, you can suffer throughout your time "running" on that day.

Due to several reasons - mainly that 2020 means clarity in how hard the world is - there are some changes to the typical process. Like the current world reflects, we will not be interacting in old ways. That means that in order to suffer, you'll need to email the entry and Venmo or PayPal the payments. The race is keeping with making the entry difficult. That way when someone complains about the race being hard, entering the race was hard also. At least the race keeps with the theme of this year.

There is an increase in prices as well, not to make the entry more difficult but to cover expenses for the race. In past years, prices for the shorts have increased as have prices for embroidery. Time to make the bibs has been at a premium as well. All of this has not allowed for a sizable donation to Cane Creek Elementary as we had hoped. I think that you will find the early entry fee a great deal for all the suffering (and cool stuff) you get from the race.

Finally, it would be foolish to not have a contingency plan when races all around have been canceled. I promise that I will not let you off the hook easily. I do not, however, want anyone to become ill from Covid 19. Your suffering should be at the hands of The Blister's Sadist alone. No stinking virus need to interfere. We have ways of making the suffering happen in spite of the virus.
