Ohio may give you credit for qualifying sales tax already paid to the other state. Ohio rules can differ for new versus used vehicle transactions, so do not assume every used-for-used purchase receives this reduction.

Review the buyer’s order carefully to confirm that the selling price, trade-in allowance, lien payoff, and any negative equity are listed separately and accurately. A paid-off trade usually shows the full agreed trade value as the allowance. If the trade has a lien, the payoff satisfies the lender and the remaining equity belongs in the transaction details; the payoff is not automatically the same as the trade-in value. If the payoff exceeds the trade value, that negative equity may affect the taxable amount when included in the total purchase price.
