Trust the Wheel | Intel says Yes

The promise of autonomous vehicle technology is tantalizing to say the least. Some experts predict that we can save millions of lives and grant mobility to all just by removing humans from the driver’s seat. But the difference between theory and practice comes down to this: People are downright scared of robot cars. In fact, a recent AAA study found that 75 percent of Americans are afraid to ride in self-driving cars.

The recent news is this is a solvable problem. At Intel, they believe we can overcome consumer apprehension by creating an interactive experience between car and rider that is informative, helpful, and comfortable – in a word: trustworthy. The user experience research team showed this potential in a recent Trust Interaction Study with autonomous car passengers.

This limited, qualitative study was conducted with consumers who had no previous exposure to driverless cars other than those they had seen in their city. They were invited to take a ride in a driverless test car in exchange for their feedback about the experience. Five trust interactions were prototyped and evaluated: requesting a vehicle, starting a trip, making changes to the trip, handling errors and emergencies, and pulling over and exiting. They interviewed them before and after their ride and also recorded their reactions during the experience.

The focus was on trusting the machine and understanding the human-to-machine interfaces (displays, touch screens, vocal cues and more) that provide the means for passengers to interact with their driverless cars. Although limited in scope, the results were unanimous. Every single participant experienced a huge leap in their confidence level after their journey. Even those who came in apprehensive about self-driving cars acknowledged that autonomous vehicles are a safer mode of transportation and felt excited about the growth of this market.

While much was learned in this study, it is only the beginning. Intel is close to perfecting the technology for self-driving cars. But our driverless future won’t go anywhere if people don’t trust it.

Marketing 101 !!

It's a pretty simple idea. Gauzy's smart glass technology uses thin LCDs bonded to automotive safety glass and powered by a vehicle's electrical system. Smart glass windows are clear when the car is running, but as soon as the key is turned off the windows turn opaque and become a high-definition display.

And you thought those window-mounted LED signs were annoying.

HANDLE THE FLAT

You know the day has just got worse when you get a flat tire on your car, but it is extra bad news when you happen to be on the highway and it goes flat.

Sure the flat tire in an inconvenience, but when you are on a busy highway, safety becomes a big issue too.

Highways are dangerous places at the best of times, but when you are pulled over on the side with a flat tire, you are in a vulnerable position. Here is a look at how to handle a flat tire and keep yourself and drivers as safe as possible.

Handling a flat tire

The first thing to do if you notice that your car is suffering from a flat tire, is slow down and keep a firm grip on the steering wheel .

Don’t be tempted to slam the brakes on as this could cause you to lose control, so try to slow down in a controlled way by taking your foot of the gas pedal. Look around you and see how safely you can change lanes. Try to make your way into a safe place, away from speeding traffic.

Pulling over

Driving a short distance on a flat tire, for a short period should be fine... If you avoid sudden movements and your priority is to get yourself onto safe grounds, rather than stop in traffic.

Once you have managed to move to a safe place on the side of the highway, turn on your flashers immediately, so that other vehicles can clearly see you and know that you have a problem.

Keeping safe

Having managed to get your vehicle off to the side of the highway, you need to do everything you can while you wait for help.

Do not attempt to change your tire, unless you really know what you are doing. Plus you need to make sure it can be worked on safely, away from the traffic. This is unlikely tho.

Don’t stand behind or next to your car while help arrives. It is often better to stay in your car unless you are able to safely walk to secure area.

Getting a flat tire on the freeway is never going to be fun, but staying safe and making sure you avoid serious injury, or your passengers is way more valuable than the inconvenience.

Avoid. Handle. Pull Over. Safety First.
