🚗 Another Tuesday… another heater core!

Today we had a 2019 Dodge Ram come in with two big complaints:
🔥 The fan was running constantly
🤢 Strong antifreeze smell with a leak
under the passenger side.

After a full inspection, we found the culprit: a failed heater core.

Most people don’t realize that replacing a heater core is a major job — the entire dashboard has to be removed to access it. Heater cores sit deep inside the HVAC box behind the dash, so getting to them requires several hours of labor and careful disassembly. The good news? 👉 We do them every single day, and our team is experienced and efficient with this repair.

🔧 Why heater cores fail:
• Internal corrosion
• Age and high mileage
• Poor coolant maintenance
• Debris or buildup inside the
cooling system
• Manufacturing defects (common
on certain models)

💧 Why the antifreeze smell & leak
happened:

A leaking heater core allows hot coolant to escape the HVAC system, which pushes the smell into the cabin and drains down the passenger side. When coolant leaks, air gets trapped in the system — causing the blower motor to work harder, run constantly, or behave erratically.

🌬 Why the fan kept running:

When the heater core leaks, the HVAC system doesn’t get proper temperature readings. The truck senses something is off, so the fan may run continuously trying to regulate cabin temperature or compensate for the loss of coolant flow.

This is what can happen when diesel fuel is contaminated with water. The photos below show diesel we drained from a customer’s tank — the tan, milky mixture is water separated inside the fuel, which caused the truck to stall and triggered the dash warning.

💧 Water and diesel do NOT mix.
It can lead to:
• Hard starting or stalling
• Injector and pump damage
• Corrosion inside the fuel system
• Costly repairs

👉 Tip: Always be mindful of where you fuel up. Choose reputable stations and avoid pumps that look poorly maintained or have signs of water intrusion.

If your diesel ever shows a “Water in Fuel” message, don’t ignore it — shut the vehicle off and have it inspected immediately.

Today we have a customer complaining of a foul smell in their vehicle. When they turned the heater on a few days ago there was something flipping around near the glove box and a bad smell the next day. Upon removing the glove box and exposing the blower motor, we found the culprit!
