The Biggest Mistake People Make with Leather? Assuming it doesn't need looking after.
Many people believe that because modern leather has a protective clear coating applied to the surface, it can simply be left alone for years without any maintenance.
Unfortunately, that's not how leather works.
Every time you sit on a leather sofa, slide across a car seat, wear a leather jacket, or use a leather handbag, body oils, sweat, dirt, friction, UV exposure, and everyday wear are slowly affecting the surface.
The clear coating is there to protect the leather, but it is not indestructible. Over time, contamination builds up, protection wears away, and the surface becomes more vulnerable to colour loss, cracking, staining, and premature ageing.
The best time to start caring for leather isn't when it looks worn.
It's the day you buy it.
A simple programme of regular cleaning and protection helps remove harmful contamination, reduces wear, maintains appearance, and significantly extends the life of the leather.
Just as you wouldn't buy a new car and never service it, leather should never be viewed as a maintenance-free material.
The leather items that last the longest are rarely the newest.
They're the ones that have been cared for consistently from day one.
At the Leather Repair Company, we believe leather should be protected, maintained, and preserved—not replaced.
