Mountain drives are beautiful: but Colorado roads can change quickly. Traction Law season on the I-70 mountain corridor runs from September 1 through May 31, and drivers should be ready when conditions call for extra traction. 🏔️
Before heading into the mountains:
✅ 4WD or AWD vehicles need adequate tire tread.
✅ Mud/snow or all-weather tires should meet the three-peak mountain snowflake standard.
✅ Chains or approved traction devices may be required in certain conditions.
✅ Check your tire tread: Colorado guidance calls for at least 3/16 of an inch.
✅ Don’t forget to inspect your spare tire, too.
A quick winter-readiness check can help Colorado Springs families, commuters, and fall mountain travelers enjoy more confidence on the road. No guesswork: just a little preparation before the first mountain snow.
