🔧 **Tech Tip Tuesday at Winner Auto Center**

Your steering rack boots do more than keep dirt and moisture out. They protect the moving parts inside your steering system from road debris and contamination.

In this week’s photo, the rack boot is completely torn apart, and the steering rack is covered in fluid. A damaged boot can let water and dirt get inside, leading to corrosion and premature wear. The fluid may also point to a leaking steering rack seal, which can eventually cause low power steering fluid, noisy steering, or difficulty turning the wheel.

If you notice fluid around your steering rack or boots that are cracked, torn, or soaked in fluid, it is worth having them checked before a small problem turns into a bigger repair.

🔧 **Tech Tip Tuesday at Winner Auto Center!** ❄️

This AC compressor clutch got so hot that it actually started bubbling the paint! That is not something you want to see under the hood.

Excessive heat at the compressor clutch can be caused by clutch slippage, excessive air gap, electrical problems, or a compressor that is beginning to seize. If the clutch cannot engage properly or the compressor is creating too much resistance, heat builds up quickly and can damage the clutch, belt, and other components.

If your AC starts making unusual noises, smells like something is burning, or stops blowing cold air, it is worth having it checked before a small problem turns into a bigger repair.

This is what happens when an inboard CV axle boot decides to let go.

The grease you see all over the control arm and transmission isn't an oil leak. The inner CV joint is packed with grease and protected by a rubber boot. When that boot tears, the axle spins and throws the grease outward, coating everything around it.

The grease is there for a reason. It keeps the CV joint lubricated and helps protect it from dirt and moisture. Once the boot is damaged, that grease can escape and contamination can get in. Keep driving it long enough and the CV joint itself can become damaged.

A torn boot doesn't necessarily mean the axle is already bad, but the longer it is driven this way, the greater the chance that the joint will need to be replaced along with the boot.

If you see grease sprayed around the inside of your engine bay or suspension, don't assume it's just a messy leak. It could be an axle boot giving you an early warning.

Here’s a look down the intake ports at some intake valves that have seen better days.

That heavy carbon buildup can restrict airflow and disrupt the air entering the cylinder. On some engines, especially those with direct injection, fuel is sprayed directly into the cylinder instead of across the back of the intake valves. That means the valves don’t get the same cleaning effect from the fuel, allowing deposits to build up over time.

In this case, the vehicle was experiencing misfires. Carbon buildup like this can contribute to poor airflow, uneven cylinder filling, and valve sealing problems, all of which can affect how well an engine runs.

A misfire doesn’t always mean you need plugs or coils. Sometimes you have to look a little deeper to find the real problem.

This differential bushing has a pretty obvious problem. The rubber has cracked all the way through, allowing the differential to move more than it should.

Differential bushings are there to control movement of the differential under acceleration, deceleration, and changes in load. When the rubber starts to separate or crack, that movement can cause clunking or banging noises, drivetrain vibration, or a noticeable jolt when getting on or off the throttle.

A worn bushing can also put additional stress on other drivetrain components. Sometimes the bushing itself is the only problem, but it is always worth checking the surrounding mounts and hardware for signs of excessive movement or damage.

Not every cracked bushing needs to be replaced immediately, but a crack that has progressed to separation or allows excessive movement is a different story.

If you hear a clunk from the rear of your vehicle when accelerating, decelerating, or shifting between drive and reverse, it is worth having it checked out.
