There seems to be some confusion about tire pressure monitoring systems and how they work. The "sensor" mounted inside the tire is a small radio transmitter. The receiver is mounted inside the vehicle usually under the dash. Each sensor emits a different frequency. For the monitor to know which tire is low it has to "learn" where each sensor is. This process requires the sensors to be learned in a certain order. During the learn process each sensor is "excited' in order so the computer can learn what position it is in. every time your tires are rotated this process must be repeated.

Hey all,
We're going to try something new. We would like to recognize our great customers and thank them for allowing us to repair their vehicles. This time we would like to recognize Kurt Garbes. We recently performed a computer upgrade and enhanced tuning on his 1998 GMC Sierra truck. Due to the many modifications on this truck Kurt had met with some challenges. We are happy to say the truck is now performing up to his expectations. Thank you to Kurt Garbes for letting us help you with this repair.

This question came up again yesterday." I was told I couldn't switch back to conventional oil once I used synthetic". Once again, this is a total myth. Your engine doesn't know or care. It is more important to use a quality oil and have it changed regularly. If there was any doubt, why would a synthetic blend exist. Since I mentioned synthetic blends let me expound a little on that subject. I don't use blends because there is no standard for them. If a conventional oil contains 1% synthetic it is considered a blend. Are there benefits to synthetic oils? Absolutely. Are they more expensive? Not really. Our synthetic oil change is roughly double the price of our conventional but the interval for change is twice as long, so it really evens out.

Hey Y'all,
Maintenance is important. Had someone breakdown in front of the shop on Friday. After a little investigation we were able to confirm that the timing belt had broken. Unfortunatly, when the engine went out of time, valves hit pistons and major damage was the result. Piston in cylinder number one is broken. What should have been $600.00-$700.00 worth of maintenence has now turned into a very expensive engine replacment.

I realized yesterday that I had omitted something from the post about oil changes...tire rotation. Tires need to be rotated to different positions on the car to help prevent uneven tire wear. Tires should be rotated every other time a conventional oil change is performed and every time with a synthetic change.

I've been getting questions lately about oil change intervals. I've read different stories on social media on how often you should get your oil changed and how shops are telling you it should be changed more often than is really necessary. Here at My Car Guy we recommend 4,000 miles for conventional oil and 8,000 miles for synthetic. Engines have gotten more complicated in the last few years. Most vehicle now have some form of variable valve or camshaft timing. These engines have hydraulic/mechanical devises that can actually change the physical position of the camshaft while the engine is running. Engine oil quality and condition are more important than ever. Putting incorrect oil in todays engines can cause them to run poorly and can even cause fault codes and check engine lights. Hopefully this has helped to clear up some questions about oil changes, if there are any questions please post them under comments and I'll be happy to answer.
