The Motogo - Spirit of Skidmark Award
Skidmark Garage was a place where all were welcomed who welcomed all. On paper, it was a community motorcycle garage, but the word COMMUNITY was intentionally listed first. It was inside the walls of Skidmark Garage that Motogo was dreamt up and born.
Founder Brian Schaffran had a vision to build a place where people could work on whatever was broken, together. Sometimes that was a motorcycle, sometimes it was something harder to fix. In reality, Skidmark was a place for people to grab hold of the opportunity to be a helper.
By example, Brian quietly jumped in to support anyone who needed a hand. He stayed late at night, sweeping floors, hanging tools, and making sure that people had a safe space to hang out, grab a slice of pizza , and a drink a cold b**r. When people didn’t have enough money to pay their dues, he turned a blind eye and gave them a chance to pay in sweat equity. He intentionally sought out and included people who are often left out in life. This was a place where people from two sides of town found common ground working on a carburetor.
The Spirit of Skidmark award has been created to pay homage to Motogo’s founding roots and recognize an individual who embodies the “quiet helper,” who goes above and beyond, before even being asked. This award is for the person who never seeks recognition, but cares enough to stay behind and clean the mess, lend the hand, and go the extra mile for the benefit of others.
“This first year, we are honoring Mike Sturdevant with this award. His particular Spirit of Skidmark was shown through his constant efforts to have CSU build projects for motogo, and then he organized a team of people to build 20 new motorcycle lifts for skidmark garage. He has taught some of us how to ride flat track. He has donated time and money to both Motogo and Skidmark Garage over and over without anyone ever asking him to do so. His kindness and friendship has meant a lot to this organization, and to our predecessor, Skidmark Garage.”- Brian Schaffran
