25 Years Later — Never Forgotten

25 years.

And yet, I can remember that morning like it just happened.

I had just gotten home from working an ER shift in Tampa. I turned on the television and saw President Bush visiting an elementary school in Sarasota.

At first, I thought, That's a great thing for him to be doing—visiting the children.

I went to take a shower.

When I came back, the news was reporting that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers.

That's terrible.

Then another plane hit the second tower.

I remember becoming almost mentally paralyzed.

We're under attack.

Then the airspace was shut down.

As the day unfolded, we learned that four airplanes had been hijacked.

The world had changed.

I had served as an Army Medic before September 11. I had spent my career in healthcare, helping people when they were having some of the worst moments of their lives.

But that day was different.

We watched firefighters, police officers, EMTs, paramedics, physicians, nurses, military personnel, and ordinary people run toward the danger while everyone else was trying to get away.

Thousands of innocent people never made it home.

And thousands more carried the physical and emotional scars of that day for the rest of their lives.

Today, 25 years later, we remember them.

We remember the lives that were taken.

We remember the heroes who responded.

We remember the families who lost someone they loved.

And we remember everyone who served in the years that followed.

Before today gets busy, please take a moment of silence.

Put down the phone.

Look around.

Think about the people who didn't get to go home that day.

Think about the people who ran into the burning buildings to save someone else.

Think about the men and women who answered the call afterward.

25 years later, we remember.

We honor them.

We will not forget.

A moment, before the holiday.

While we're sitting back with a b**r, firing up the grill, out on the boat, or driving to be with family this weekend — take a second to think about the young soldiers still deployed in the Middle East.

If we don't see it in the news, it's easy to forget it's still happening. We have not forgotten you.

If you have a family member out there, you understand this in a way words don't quite capture.

Roughly 2,000 soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division were sent to the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility back in March. Their deployment was recently extended — some units now serving a full 12-month rotation, keeping troops in the region into March 2027.

As an Army Medic myself, I think about them constantly — not just their physical safety, but the mental weight of it. They're protecting us, protecting our families, following orders they didn't write. I'd imagine most of them would rather be home right now, doing exactly what we're doing this weekend.
