Mack's Service marks 70 years of family-owned business.
In the heart of Clark on U.S. Highway 212 sits a business that is much more than a gas station. For generations, Mack's Service has been a gathering place, a repair shop, a roadside lifeline and a symbol of trust. The story begins with Gene Mack, a World War II veteran returning home with a determination to build a life within the Clark community that he so loved. Gene worked alongside his father, Roy Mack, digging wells throughout the area. In 1951, Gene was compelled to leave such a demanding job to work as an attendant at Clark's brand-new Standard Oil service station, Mac's Standard. Those were the golden days of the American service station, when attendants pumped gas, checked oil, cleaned windshields and knew nearly every customer by name.
Gene quickly learned the business and discovered he truly enjoyed serving people. Five years later in September 1956, he took a leap of faith and purchased the station himself. By adding a single letter to the sign, "Mac's Standard" became "Mack's Standard Service." Gene worked at the station until 1985, when he handed the torch to his son, Bob Mack and eventually to his grandson, John Mack. Since then, the station has seen countless memories: from forgetful parents to soldiers being transported during the Vietnam era to motorcyclists visiting for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally to today. Times have changed vastly from the beginning, but not once has the Mack family considered closing or selling the business. Their motivation has always been simple: family and service. If Gene Mack walked through the doors of Mack's today, he would still be able to see customers being greeted by name and the same family continuing the work he began all those years ago.
