FUN FACT SERIES:

A little piece of Italy right here in Niles, Illinois! 🇮🇹 The Leaning Tower of Niles was completed in 1934 and was built as a half-scale replica of the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Standing about 94 feet tall and leaning approximately 7.4 feet from vertical, it has become one of Niles’ most recognizable landmarks.

What makes the story even more interesting is that it wasn’t originally built as a tourist attraction. Chicago businessman Robert Ilg constructed it as part of a recreational park for his employees. The tower actually concealed a water tank and pumping equipment that served the park’s swimming pools—making it a pretty impressive-looking water tower!

The tower has also had a connection to Italy for decades, including historic Italian bells, and Niles became a sister city with Pisa in 1991. In 2019, the Leaning Tower of Niles was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

So if you’ve lived in or around Niles for years, you may drive past it without giving it much thought—but this quirky little landmark has quite a history! 🇮🇹🏛️
