You might have read that the Thunderbird was Ford’s response to the Corvette, as in this sentence from a publication: “The Ford Thunderbird was introduced in February 1953 as a response to Chevrolet’s new sports car, the Corvette, which was publicly unveiled in prototype form just a month before.” That’s not totally accurate. It’s not as if Ford saw the Corvette’s debut and then jumped into action. When Chevrolet debuted the Corvette, Ford’s project to create a sporty car had been in the works for a while. It did, however, light a fire under the project at Ford. The Corvette was conceived as a sports car from the very start. It was designed to look and drive like a sports car, something to rival popular European models—in other words, to look NOTHING LIKE anything Chevrolet had ever done. They wanted to capture the attention of American car buyers who didn’t even know they wanted something totally different, new, exciting…and sporty. Ford had a different take on their new concept car. While they too were inspired by European sports cars, they wanted to introduce a sporty new car that was also luxurious, powerful and personal. In fact, with the introduction of the Thunderbird, Ford is credited with creating an entirely new category of automobiles—the personal luxury car. The Thunderbird would go into production the in the fall of 1955 on October 22. Billed as a personal luxury car, not a sports car, it smashed expectations in its first year, selling 16,155 units. This compared favorably to the Corvette, of which only 700 sold that year. Ultimately, the Ford Thunderbird didn’t last long as a competitor to the Corvette. However, its enlargement likely saved both models. After being forced to improve the performance of the Corvette by planting a V8 under its hood, Chevrolet finally achieved desirable sales figures. Without competition from any domestic automaker, the Corvette became America’s Sports Car. On this day in 1985 "the Breakfast Club" made it's film debut. What happens when five strangers end up together in Saturday detention? Badass posturing, gleeful misbehavior, and a potent dose of angst. With this exuberant, disarmingly candid film, writer-director John Hughes established himself as the bard of American youth, vividly and empathetically capturing how teenagers hang out, act up, and goof off. The Breakfast Club brings together an assortment of adolescent archetypes—the uptight popular girl (Molly Ringwald), the stoic jock (Emilio Estevez), the foulmouthed rebel (Judd Nelson), the virginal bookworm (Anthony Michael Hall), and the kooky recluse (Ally Sheedy)—and watches them shed their personae and emerge into unlikely friendships. With its highly quotable dialogue and star-making performances, this exploration of the trials of adolescence became an era-defining pop-culture phenomenon, one whose influence now spans generations. If your foreign car is stuck in detention bring it to AUTO4N Cincinnati's service specialists!

The Great Race of 1908 was an event sponsored by newspaper companies to sell both press and automobiles. The Parisian daily Le Matin in conjunction with The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune sponsored the six car journey from New York to Paris. This race around the world began on February 12, 1908 in Times Square. Three Parisian cars, the De Dion, Moto Bloc, and Sizaire-Naudin, the American Thomas Flyer, the German Protos, and the Italian Zust all participated, though only three would finish. Automotive manufacturer E.R. Thomas and his "Thomas Flyer" from Buffalo won the first and only Great Race.
A crowd of over 250 000 people witnessed the adventure's start at 43rd Street and 7th Avenue in New York City. An atlas had been consulted and a very specific course laid out, leading from New York west to Chicago and across the prairie. The cars would cross the Rocky Mountains in northern Nevada and arrive in San Francisco, where they would take a steamship to Seattle. There they would change ships for Valdez, Alaska. If a car lost its lead in waiting for passage on a ship, so that other cars caught up, it would be granted its same lead on debarkation, and the other cars held back. The race cars were intended to drive across Alaska and cross the frozen Bering Strait, then push on across Russia to Europe -- to Poland, Germany, France, Paris, the Eiffel Tower. The trip was estimated at six months.
Because of the many hazards, the journey across America actually took six weeks instead of the two weeks originally envisioned. In some places, the cars resorted to riding along railroad tracks when there were no roads. In Japan, the cars faced seemingly impossible challenges. The only option was to travel on narrow trails meant for rickshaws. The mountainous terrain was twisted and filled with village obstacles, and torrential rains flooded the land. The Great Race of 1908 holds a special place in history as the longest and most difficult automobile course. But getting your foreign car serviced in Cincinnati? AUTO4N is your local specialist!

Auto industry titan Semon Knudsen was born in 1912 to William Knudsen, who himself would later become president of General Motors (1937-1940). His father gave him the nickname Bunkie, referring to the WWI term for bunk mate. The pair had a special bond, and the elder Knudsen knew how to play into his son’s interests. When 14-year-old Bunkie asked for a new car, his father gave him a brand new 1927 Chevrolet. The only thing, it was fully disassembled. Bunkie went to work putting the car together piece by piece by hand, a process that cemented an interest in automobiles. His automotive career began after earning an engineering degree from MIT and then taking a low level position at Pontiac in 1939. Like father, like son, he would go on to become a successful executive in the industry. Over the next 16 years he would work in 106 different GM plants, eventually leading to his promotion to general manager of Pontiac in 1956. His mission was clear, improve sales at the division. To do so he yanked Peter Estes from Oldsmobile to be his chief engineer and hired John DeLorean from Hudson to be his assistant. With this team they transformed the image of Oldsmobile from boring yet reliable to fast and fun. This included pushing Pontiac’s participation in NASCAR and resulted in the wide-track Pontiacs, including the Pontiac Bonneville. His success at Pontiac led Knudsen up the corporate ladder, become GM of Chevrolet in 1962. He continued to push performance models at Chevy, leading to the introduction of SS (Super Sport) models. He would also lead efforts on the Chevrolet Chevelle, which first came to market for the 1964 model year and later become Chevrolet’s main muscle car. However he wouldn’t stick around GM long enough to witness the peak of the horsepower wars. After being elected VP of GM in 1967, he was passed over for the presidency, watching it go to Ed Cole instead. This led to him leaving GM in February 1968 to become the president of Ford Motor Company. AUTO4N is your local foreign car service specialist, Bunkie would approve!

The V12 Liberty and the birth of the Lincoln Motor Company

The roots of Lincoln trace back to the visionary mind of Henry Leland, the man behind the creation of the Cadillac in 1902. Initially hired by William Murphy and his partners at the Henry Ford Company to appraise assets before liquidation, Leland saw potential where others saw failure. Advising against dissolution, he proposed reorganization and the development of a new car powered by a single-cylinder engine originally designed for Oldsmobile. The result? The birth of Cadillac. Leland’s impact extended beyond Cadillac, influencing modern manufacturing principles and earning recognition from industry giants like Alfred P. Sloan. However, in 1909, he sold Cadillac to General Motors for $4.5 million. The deal allowed him to stay on as executive. However, when Cadillac received request from the US government to build aircraft engines during World War I, General Motor’s founder William Durant said no, citing his position as a Pacifist. Leland did not take kindly to this decision and in 1917 he left Cadillac, accepting a $10,000,000 government contract to form a new company to build the V12 Liberty aircraft engine. Lincoln Motor Company was born. Post-war, Lincoln underwent a transformation, retooling its plant to manufacture luxury automobiles, with its first V8 engine drawing inspiration from the Liberty engine’s design. in 1920, the first Lincoln car, the Model 8, started to roll out of the factory. Debra Harry and BLONDIE had the number one hit from January 31, 1981 – February 6, 1981 with the song "The Tide Is High". Blondie was formed after the fall out of Debbie's previous band, The Stilettos in the summer of 1974. Debbie Harry and her partner/collaborator, Chris Stein, were Stiletto band members but the girl fronted do w*p band wasn't having much success getting gigs, let alone a record deal. Blondie was a new start, christened by the nick name passer bys always called Debbie. She liked it, thought it was catchy and suitable for the kind of music she envisioned the new band playing. The Punk rock scene from England was starting to affect New York City clubs and Blondie was hanging around with early fans of the music including Richard Hell, The Ramones and Television. Through this entire period of transition and growth towards becoming major music stars. Debbie Harry drove a classic pony car; a 1967 Chevrolet Camaro coupe. Debbie owned it from her arrival in New York in 1971. In 1977 just before Blondie was to leave for Blondie's Tour in England the car had problems The clutch failed leaving just Reverse and Park. Debbie drove backwards down the Avenue of the Americas into a garage.Blondie was in England from May to June 3rd. When they returned she asked what happened to the car. The garage said it was towed to a scrapyard for destruction as it was too far gone to repair. The scrapyard wouldn't take the car without an ownership title. Debbie didn't have it with her so the car was driven off a cliff. She wrote a song called "I'm On E"about it. Don't drive your car off a cliff AUTO4N can get your car back on the road again.

London Transport’s first female bus mechanic!

In August 1984, at the age of 18, Clifford qualified as London Transport’s first female bus mechanic after completing a course at West Ham garage. Up until then, women had only been given the temporary opportunity to take on what were considered typically male roles in stations, garages, depots and engineering works during the First and Second World Wars. It’s likely that Clifford would have worked on the RM type, best known as the Routemaster, as well as cheaper off-the-peg buses and driver-only operation that were used on some routes to reduce costs.

Clifford was also a qualified bus driver, a position which was opened up to women in 1974. That didn’t stop London Transport launching a recruitment campaign in 1980 that ran adverts which played on the then-prevalent, and untrue, stereotype that women were poor drivers.

In the winter of 1957 HOT ROD editor Wally Parks and research editor Ray Brock along with engine builder Bill Likes, traveled from Los Angeles to Daytona Beach to attend the 8th annual NASCAR International Safety and Performance Trials. Towed behind Brock's 1954 Oldsmobile was a new Plymouth Savoy, provided by Plymouth and hot rodded in the course of two busy weeks with a race-built 389-cubic-inch Hemi and custom Hedman Hedders. The plan was to race the car on the Daytona sand in NASCAR's "Experimental" class. The car's maiden run was good enough to win the Experimental class top speed trophy, setting a new record of 159.893 mph for the class an all-time Daytona record for stock bodied cars and netting top MPH for the entire two week event! Just after WWII, fiberglass was thought of as a new wonder material. Lightweight, strong, corrosion proof, waterproof, easily cast in exotic shapes, it seemed perfect for limited-production car bodies. Detroit was quick to grasp its utility and soon began making styling studies and concept cars out of the new material. Chuck Jordan designed the Buick Centurion concept for the 1956 Motorama show; which featured sweeping lines, bat fins, and bubble top, it also had the world’s first reversing camera with in-dash monitor. In 1957, aged 30, Chuck became the chief designer for Cadillac. One of his most famous designs was the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado featuring the highest-ever fins, a concept he designed to compete with Plymouth. In 1962, Chuck became Executive in charge of Automotive Design, responsible for all GM car and truck exteriors. Between 1967 and 1970, Chuck worked in Europe, as design director for Adam Opel AG in Rüsselsheim, Germany. Whilst there, he was responsible for a number of well-regarded designs, including the Opel Manta coupe and the 1968 production model GT sports car. In 1986, Chuck Jordan became Vice President of GM Design. His team was responsible for the 1990’s generation of Camaros and Firebirds, the Oldsmobile Aurora, and the 1992 Cadillac STS. Chuck Jordan retired in 1992 at the age of 65. Thanks Chuck! If your foreign car needs service AUTO4N is your local repair specialists.

The first international rally that Nissan Motor entered was the 6th Australian Rally (official name: 1958 Around Australia Mobilgas Trial), held from August 20 to September 7, 1958. This contest, which was the longest in the world at that time, was a 16,000-kilometer endurance trial that went clockwise around the Australian continent. In fact, it was so grueling that after 1958 it was never held again.
Entered in the 1958 event were 67 vehicles from all over the world. From Japan there were 2 Datsun 210s and 3 Toyopets. In Class A (under 1,000cc), the Datsuns shone, coming in 1st and 4th. The Datsun 210, which had gone on sale the previous year, was an ambitious model, powered by Nissan’s first OHV engine (Type C). After appearing in a Los Angeles motor show for foreign imports in March 1958, exports to the US started in September. Most of the models sold in the US market at that time were full-size, but thanks to the 210’s achievements in the Australian rally, it attracted a great deal of attention when it was exhibited in a New York motor show the following April. This laid the foundation for Nissan’s exports to America. If your Nissan or other foreign car needs service AUTO4N is Cincinnati's local specialist!

Five years to the day that American aviator Charles Lindbergh became the first pilot to accomplish a solo, nonstop flight across the Atlantic Ocean, female aviator Amelia Earhart becomes the first pilot to repeat the feat, landing her plane in Ireland after flying across the North Atlantic. Earhart traveled over 2,000 miles from Newfoundland in just under 15 hours. In 1928, as a member of a three-person crew, she had become the first woman to cross the Atlantic in an aircraft. Although her only function during the crossing was to keep the plane’s log, the event won her national fame, and Americans were enamored with the daring and modest young pilot. For her solo transatlantic crossing in 1932, she was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross by the U.S. Congress. In 1937 she attempted, along with copilot Frederick J. Noonan, to fly around the world, but her plane disappeared near Howland Island in the South Pacific on July 2, 1937. The U.S. Coast Guard cutter Itasca picked up radio messages that she was lost and low in fuel—the last the world ever heard from Amelia Earhart. Wednesday January 10th 1979 the last convertible Volkswagen Beetle was produced. The VW "Bug" was a popular car throughout the 1970's, leading to innovations such as sun roofs and convertible tops, in an otherwise unchanging design. Also noteible in January of 1979, the Blues Brothers "Soul Man" hits the charts at #14. Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi as The Blues Brothers with their cover of Sam & Dave's 1967 hit. The band's live debut album Briefcase Full of Blues reaches #1 on the Billboard album chart and sold over two million US copies, going double platinum. A world record 103 cars were wrecked during filming of the Blues Brothers Movie. "The Junkman (1982)" broke the record 2 years later, wrecking 150 cars and a plane. That record held for 2 decades, until over 300 cars were wrecked during the filming of "The Matrix Reloaded (2003)." AUTO4N likes the Blues Brothers!
