In 1898, Alexander Winton built the first semi-trucks for carrying cars, sparking a wave of innovation that eventually replaced wagons and founded the modern trucking industry.

The Winton Motor Carriage Company sold its first 22 cars in 1898, creating the need for delivery. Driving the cars to customers would lead to wear and tear and high costs, which prompted Winton to invent the semi-truck for vehicle delivery.

The first semi-trailer used a modified short-wheeled touring automobile (the tractor) with a cart (the trailer) attached to the rear of it. The platform sat on top of the engine portion and rested on a pair of wheels on the other end. Most cars and trucks today have engines in the front, but this one had an engine in the rear.

Long before diesel engines dominated America's highways, goods were transported by horse-drawn wagons. Our 1903 Eldridge is the oldest truck in our collection, and it was manufactured in Iowa! This truck was used to transport various items between Eldridge’s various machine shops.
