Yates Polytechny Institute was opened by Congressman and War of 1812 veteran John B. Yates in 1816 and operated as Yates Polytechny until 1832.

After Yates’ death in 1837, it reopened under new ownership and tutelage as “Yates Polytechnical” for another 34 years, serving more than 4,000 students from across the state.

In 1871, it was converted into a public school and continued holding classes until 1928, when students moved to the brand-new Lake Street Elementary for the 1928–29 fall session.

Fun fact: The first graduating class of Lake Street High School included a student named John Thomas “Tommy” Pattinson. Tommy would go on to take over his father’s dealership, Pattinson Chevrolet, in 1947.

Upon Tommy’s passing in 1979, Joe Caputo purchased Pat’s Chevy and converted it into Sun Chevrolet!

It takes a second to get from 1816 to Sun Chevrolet, but it’s a pretty good ride through history!
