KNOW YOUR BRAKES 🛑

October is Brake Awareness Month, so we’re breaking down what’s actually happening behind your wheels when you step on the brake pedal.

Your braking system has several components working together every single time you slow down or stop:

🔧 Brake Caliper - Holds the brake pads and squeezes them against the rotor when you apply the brakes.

🔧 Brake Pads - Create friction against the rotor to slow and stop your vehicle. Because they’re designed to wear over time, they need to be inspected and replaced when they get too thin.

🔧 Brake Rotor - The metal disc your brake pads press against to create the friction needed to slow the wheel.

When these components are working properly together, you probably don't think about them at all. But when something begins to wear, your car may start giving you clues.

Pay attention to:
• Squeaking, squealing or grinding
• Vibration or pulsating while braking
• A soft or unusual-feeling brake pedal
• Your vehicle pulling while braking
• Longer stopping distances
• Brake or ABS warning lights

Your vehicle drives perfectly smoothly… until you hit the brakes.

Suddenly, the steering wheel starts to shake or pulse in your hands — and the harder you brake, the more noticeable it gets.

What’s the most likely culprit?

A. Wheel alignment
B. Worn or uneven brake rotors
C. Low engine oil
D. Weak battery

ANSWER: B — Worn or uneven brake rotors!

When brake rotors develop uneven thickness, excessive wear, or other surface irregularities, braking can create a pulsating sensation that may be felt through the steering wheel.

And while brake rotors are a common culprit, a shaking steering wheel should still be properly inspected rather than diagnosed by symptom alone. Braking, steering, suspension, tire, and wheel issues can sometimes create similar symptoms.

If your car has started shaking, vibrating, pulling, clicking or doing something that just doesn't feel right, don't ignore the warning signs.

No... and it’s worth checking out!

A repeated clicking or popping sound when turning, especially during sharper turns or at lower speeds, can sometimes be a sign of wear in a CV joint or axle. Depending on the sound and when it happens, steering or suspension components could also be involved.

The important thing? Don’t ignore a new or unusual noise just because your vehicle still seems to be driving normally.

Strange sounds are often one of the first ways your vehicle lets you know something is wearing out. Catching the cause early can help:

• Prevent additional wear or damage
• Reduce the chance of a more expensive repair later
• Identify a potential safety concern before it gets worse
