Should your paint be corrected before it is coated? Usually, yes.

A ceramic coating seals in whatever is underneath it. If the paint has swirl marks and haze, the coating seals those in too. Paint correction polishes the swirls and haze out of the clear coat first, so the finish under the coating looks new again.

That is why we treat the two as a pair at Great Gatsby Auto Spa & Detailing: full detail, correction where the paint needs it, then the coating. A newer car may need very little. We will look at the paint with you and tell you plainly.

October is the last full month before the salt trucks go out.

Here is the part people do not expect. A ceramic coating is not a separate appointment you slot in around a busy month. It goes on after a full detail, because a coating bonds to clean, corrected paint and locks in whatever it finds underneath. Decontamination, assessment, correction if the paint needs it, then the coating, then cure time.

So coating capacity is detail bay capacity. When the bay fills up in October, the coating slots go with it.

If you want the car protected for this winter, book the detail and add the coating to it. A November booking protects a car that has already spent a month in the salt.

Chicago starts salting the roads in November. That is about six weeks away.

Ceramic coating is a protective layer bonded to your paint. It does not change how the car looks day one so much as how it looks in March, after a winter of salt spray, slush, and freeze-thaw. Dirt has a harder time sticking. Washing gets easier. The gloss holds instead of dulling out.

Wax or ceramic coating? The honest answer depends on how long you keep the car.

Wax sits on top of the paint. It looks great and it is gone in a couple of months, faster if the car lives outside through a Chicago winter.

A ceramic coating chemically bonds to the clear coat instead of sitting on it. It holds up through salt season, and it keeps that just-detailed shine for years rather than weeks. It costs more up front because it is doing a different job.

If you are selling the car in spring, wax is fine. If you are keeping it, the maths changes.

Road salt does not scratch your paint. It bonds to it.

That is the part most people get wrong. Salt spray lands on the clear coat, holds moisture against the surface, and starts a chemical reaction that keeps working every time the car warms up in a garage or sits in the sun. It is not the plow that damages the finish. It is the residue left behind after it.

A ceramic coating is a hydrophobic barrier bonded to the clear coat. Salt cannot grip it the same way, and what does land rinses off instead of sitting there through February.
