The 9 most common car engine problems...

The engine is the heart of any functioning car. It’s one aspect of looking after and running a vehicle that you simply can’t compromise. Diagnosing a fault with your engine is not always easy and it can be even harder to repair. If you believe that your engine is struggling or, worse still, failing, make sure you take a look at the nine most common issues relating to car engine failures below. Not all engine problems are serious and can be remedied relatively quickly, but all of them can cause engine breakdowns and, in the worst-case scenarios, require a brand-new engine.

Poor lubrication
It’s absolutely vital that your engine receives enough oil between its moving parts. A lack of lubrication will cause unnecessary friction inside the engine, leading to overheating and worse still, the engine seizing up. Make sure that you get your vehicle periodically serviced, which includes a regular oil change to keep quantities at an appropriate level.

Failing oil pump
The failure of an oil pump is extremely serious for the lifespan of any engine. If an oil pump fails it will almost certainly starve the engine of necessary lubrication. Always ensure that the engine oil you use in your engine is of a genuine viscosity, making it light enough to flow fast through the pump.

Oil deposits and debris
Older, dirty oil has the propensity to leave deposits and debris on engine fittings such as intake valves and spark plugs, not to mention combustion chambers. As part of a periodic service at your local garage, they will regularly clean your engine’s oil filters to avoid debris becoming lodged within your vehicle’s bearings.

Inadequate fuel and air compression
Poor compression of both fuel and air inside a car engine is a recipe for disaster. The most common reasons for poor engine combustion is due to broken valve seals, holes within cylinders and overused piston rings, forcing air to leak out.

Leaking engine coolant
One of the easier engine faults to diagnose is leaking engine coolant. If engine coolant is continually low once it’s topped up, it’s a sure-fire signal that there is a fault within the cooling system. The coolant should be kept free of debris and deposits to maintain a safe operating temperature for your engine at all times.

Blocked engine radiators
Old engine coolant that’s not been kept clean over time can result in filling your engine’s radiators with unwanted sediment and deposits. This is another common cause of overheating engines. Try to avoid using hard water as coolant because you will run the risk of the radiators corroding over time due to limescale.

Prolonged engine detonation
If you are driving along and your engine is making a knocking noise it is quite possible that there is too much heat within its combustion chamber. A combination of overheating and high pressures creates engine detonation, also known as a spark knock, which can cause long-term damage to pistons, head gaskets and piston rings.

Damaged oxygen sensors
An inaccurate oxygen sensor is dangerous not only for your engine but for the rest of the car too. If the sensor does not give your car the right data about how much oxygen remains in the exhaust and how much fuel is in the petrol/diesel tank, you run the risk of inefficiencies with your driving, wasting lots of money in the long run.

Aged spark plugs
This issue is particularly prevalent in older vehicles. Spark plugs are designed to ignite the compressed fuel in the engine of your car. An aged spark plug creates a weak ignition and can stop an engine from turning over i.e. misfiring. This is another issue that results in inefficient fuel economy and can also cause serious long-term damage to the engine.

Why is changing engine oil so at the proper interval so important? Making sure that you changing your oil on a regular basis is the most important routine vehicle maintenance there is. Properly scheduled oil changes are crucial in keeping your car running properly. An oil change service is a great opportunity to have other areas of the vehicle checked out as well. At Lincoln Square Service, your oil change is a quick and simple service, that also includes a complimentary multi-point inspection. This means that not only do you get your oil changed in a quick and timely fashion, but you will also receive a free multi point inspection as part of your service. As part of this complimentary service, we will also inspect your belts, hoses, air filter, tire pressure, fluid levels, and much more. Our fully trained and certified staff are here to give you advice that you can trust. So whether you have a brand new vehicle that you just picked up or you are driving a vehicle that is a trusted friend, regular oil changes are something you cannot ignore.

1. Regular Oil Changes Keep You Engine Clean
When oil flows into the engine from other areas, dirt and other particles will begin to accumulate within it. If you are not changing your oil at the proper intervals, sludge will begin to build up in your engine. Those who may live in drier, dustier areas will have even more particles making there way through. Changing your engine oil as well as replacing your filters on a timely basis, will get any of these harmful bits of dirt and debris out of your engine before they do any damage.

2. Longer Engine Life More Likely with Routine Oil Changes
Oil is the lifeblood of your vehicle. It lubricates and protects your engine and many of it’s critical parts from wear and damage. The problem is, oil gets dirty. By making sure that you have your oil and filter changed according to your owner’s manual specifications, you will be keep your engine clean and protected, as well as saving time, money and stress. A regularly scheduled oil change is an investment that will help ensure that you will be driving around in your vehicle for years to come.

3. Changing Your Oil Protects Other Engine Parts
What does oil actually do in my car? Inside your engine there are a many key parts which make your engine run such as the crank shaft and the connecting rods. These rods control the pistons insde of your engine’s cylinders. There is also another piece called the camshaft which assists in opening and closing the vehicle’s exhaust valves. Making sure that you have clean oil in your vehicle’s engine is crucial in keeping of of these components well moving and running properly.

4. Get Better Gas Mileage by Changing Your Oil On Time
Changing my oil on time and I will get better gas mileage? How does that work? Finding a vehicle that is good on gas is important to all of us. Overall miles per gallon are affected by a number of factors including environment, terrain, personal driving habits and vehicle maintenance. Without proper maintenance, all that dirt and grit we talked about earlier will build up inside your engine causing friction, and friction is no friend of your engine. Friction is the enemy of engine performance and optimum fuel economy. Making sure that your engine always has clean oil in it will help to reduce friction, allowing your engine to run more efficiently with the best possible gas mileage.

6. Pass Your Vehicle Emissions Test & Protect The Environment
When it comes to passing an emissions test it is all about how many of these particles called hydrocarbons are being sprayed out into the atmosphere. If you fail to change your oil on a regular basis, dirty oil causes a build up of these hydrocarbons inside areas of your engine’s crank case. These then get burned up, causing more of them to be released into the air through the vehicle’s exhaust. Not only will changing your oil on time help you pass this required emissions test, you will also be polluting less.

7. Routine Oil Changes Help with Better Engine Performance
Over time, old oil breaks down due to exposure to heat. This causes it to loses its viscosity as well as its ability to lubricate the engine cylinder walls. Essentially, the dirtier the oil is, the harder it is to go where it needs to. That sludge begins to build up in areas blocking the flow to parts which need lubrication. Another function of oil is to draw heat from your parts of the engine. If they are sovered with sludge, these parts stay hotter longer. Ultimately the engine will run less efficiently as its performance is robbed of both gas mileage and horsepower.

More Information on Routine Oil Change Services from Lincoln Square Service
Regularly schedule oil changes are a must. Hands down, they are not a vehicle service you can ignore. Old dirty oil decrease gas mileage, lowers horsepower, and will ultimately reduce the ife of your engine. Read over the owner’s manual for your vehicle and be sure to get your oil changed at the proper intervals recommended by your manufacturer.
