UPDATE: Liberty Road Bridge Replacement Project...
The Shelby County Commission, in partnership with the City of Chelsea and the Alabama Department of Transportation, will replace the Liberty Road bridge in Chelsea beginning in May 2026. This bridge is more than 54 years old and must be replaced to accommodate the continued growth that is taking place in Chelsea. Replacement of the bridge will require that Liberty Road be closed at the bridge site during construction. We recognize this will create an inconvenience for those who live and travel Liberty Road. To minimize the inconvenience, the bridge replacement is scheduled to take place between May 26th and August 5th, while school is not in session. During construction, Liberty Road traffic will be detoured onto County Roads 433, 440, 39, and 47(see map, yellow line indicates alternate routes). Detour signage will be in place along these routes. We have coordinated with emergency, postal, and garbage service providers to minimize any service interruptions.
IMPORTANT: Drivers are urged to pay particular attention to and obey the Stop signs at the railroad crossing on CR-433.
We appreciate your patience as we work to improve Liberty Road and Shelby County. Any questions or concerns can be reported to the Shelby County Highway Department by phone at 205-669-3880 or at roadconcern.shelbyal.com.
