For this week's Throwback Thursday, we're not going too far back. Felicia Morgan captured this soaking wet photo back in 2023 during a summertime storm that drenched the competitors. One of the most popular questions about the Great Race is "What happens when it rains?" And we all know the answer to that.

The 2027 Hemmings Great Race presented by Coker Tire is a nine-day adventure from Mobile, Alabama to Buffalo, New York. The competition is intense as more than 120 cars and trucks (built in 1974 or earlier) compete for $160,000 in prize money. The cars compete on public roads, and the goal is to match a pre-determined time, set by our Director of Competition. The closest to that time wins! Great Race city stops are the BEST way to see the cars and drivers up close. We have a lunch stop and evening stop each day, (but typically no hosted lunch stops on Day 1 or Day 9), giving spectators great opportunities to watch the cars roll into town and see them while they're parked. Great Race hosted city stops are always free to the public. There are announcers who give you all the details on the cars as they roll in, and you'll also find official Great Race merchandise at each stop. Hopefully, you'll join the fun if a Great Race stop is coming to a town near you!

Independence Day 1986, Washington D.C. a great setting for this Throwback Thursday!

The Great American Race as it was then called traveled from Disneyland to New York City. Newspapers and TV stations across the country covered this event, which continued to grow in popularity. Fun fact: every Great American Race from 1983 through 1988 began in California.
