Tom McRae and Norm Miller organized the first Great Race, back in 1983. They worked hard to promote the event, and turned it into one of the greatest automotive events of all time. The Great Race is a time, speed, endurance rally, meaning the goal wasn't to get to the finish line first, but to precisely finish each checkpoint in a pre-determined amount of time. Each vehicle has a driver and a navi

gator, and the team uses a calibrated speedometer to make sure they stay on schedule, according to the day's route. It's a grand event that turns average car guys into local celebrities, as these classic cars make their way through small towns on their way across the country.

Go to the website and check out Charlie Brittingham's timeline and history with the Great Race. He spends his days wrenching on a 1913 Chevrolet but has plenty of Great Race memories along the way.

"I have always enjoyed working with and rebuilding antique cars and trucks. The Great Race allowed me to enjoy this passion all over the U.S. with many different people."

Ron Rowland gave us an amazing retrospective look at Great Race rally days before the invention of the Timewise speedometer. He wrote a great article that tells a lot of his history with the race, and how the event has changed through the years. Here's a small snippet, but be sure to read the entire article at the link below.

"I received a telephone call in June of 1986. It was Clark Thorpe, he asked, “What are you doing the next two weeks? I’m out in Los Angeles for the start of the Great American Race, and there’s a guy out here looking for a navigator.” I replied, “I don’t know how to navigate without an odometer.” He said, “You’ll figure it out.” The next day, I was on an airplane and on my way to becoming the navigator for Ted Holden in his 1935 Chrysler Airflow."

That stretch of Highway 104 between Tucumcari and Las Vegas, New Mexico was TOUGH on Great Race cars. Although Tucumcari seems like a low-lying area, it's actually at 4,000 feet of elevation. Highway 104 gradually climbs in elevation to nearly 7,000 feet. Between the heat and the altitude, there were several cars that struggled to make the climb. It's all part of the challenge!

For Throwback Thursday, let's rewind the clock to 1986 and enjoy an outstanding story from one of our long-time scoring staff members, Vickie Atkinson. Here's a snippet, but click the link to read the whole story...you don't want to miss it!

"Think about 1986 for just a minute. Pay phones, not cell phones. No satellite communications. Photography was to film, not digital. Scoring was done in the back of a U-haul motor home rental so that we could have a generator to run the computer. It was a full sized PC with a CRT monitor that was strapped to the table in the back. The way we did scoring back then was the checkpoints kept a time log and we would drive by after the last car and pick it up. John Schmidt wrote the scoring program, and John and my husband Steve were in the back inputting the data from the checkpoints while I drove. Even then, our first duty of the day was to hand out the daily course instructions to the contestants."
