This customer had a nightmare with a previous vehicle that he owned. On his 2009 Accord, his headlight bulbs were so dim, and so oxidized that he had many close encounters with pedestrians and other objects at night. He had gotten the headlights restored on that vehicle from us, and we even recommended he change the bulbs, he had 2-3 more years of being able to see and avoid situations way before a disaster could happen.

Fast forward to his 2014 CR-V, he started to see a slight oxidation at the top of his headlights, he knew what was coming. So he went ahead and got the headlights restored as a preventative measure so that he'd never have to worry about driving in the dark. The transformation on this vehicle isn't as crazy as some others we've done, but even then you can see what the restored headlight here looks like compared to the before!

⏱️ Budget a full day. A comprehensive detail on a large SUV such as an X5, GX, Wrangler, Suburban runs 6 to 9 hours depending on condition and what services are included. The size difference from a standard sedan is significant at every step: more paint panels to wash, correct, and coat, more interior surface area to vacuum and wipe, more carpet and seating to extract, bigger wheels with more barrel surface to clean.

Breaking it down: exterior decontamination, wash, and dry is typically 1.5 to 2 hours on a large SUV. ⚙️ If paint correction is included, add another 2 to 4 hours depending on the number of stages. Ceramic coating application on a large SUV adds 2 to 3 hours. Full interior with extraction adds 2 to 3 hours. These steps overlap when we're running a two-person team but the total time is still substantial.

🤍 The short answer is not dramatically, but there are some nuances worth knowing. Pearl white gets its distinctive look from mica particles in the base coat that reflect and refract light, giving it that depth and shimmer that flat white simply doesn't have. That same pearl effect also makes it more forgiving than dark colors when it comes to showing scratches and swirls, since the light-scattering properties hide surface defects better than a solid color would.

That said, a paint correction on pearl white still produces a dramatic result. ☀️ The improved clarity and reflection depth is immediately visible and makes the pearl effect pop significantly more than before. It's one of those colors that looks good even when neglected, but looks absolutely stunning when properly corrected and protected.

🛞 Not all wheel cleaning situations are the same, and we treat them differently depending on how bad the contamination actually is. Here's our approach drop yours in the comments, we're always curious how other detailers handle this.

For regular maintenance wheels that are kept up, Koch Chemie AF through the foam cannon handles the wheel cleaning just fine. 💧 No need to go aggressive on paint that's already relatively clean. The tires get a separate treatment regardless of condition since rubber holds onto old dressing, road grime, and brake dust differently than a wheel face.

For really neglected or heavily contaminated wheels, we reach for our custom mixture. 🔬 A blend of Koch Chemie MS, 3D Yellow Degreaser, and a touch of GSF to make it foamy, applied through an IK Foamer for even coverage and good dwell time. This is our strongest wheel cleaner and it's reserved for situations that actually need it. After dwell time, barrel brush for the inside, wheel face brush or mitt for the spokes and face, dedicated lug nut brush for the hardware. Every surface gets agitated before the rinse. On really contaminated wheels we'll follow up with an iron remover and watch the purple reaction confirm how much was still embedded.

🍯 We used carnauba wax up until 2022 and there's no denying it produces a beautiful warm glow on dark paint that's hard to replicate. But after enough jobs and enough headaches, we made the switch and haven't looked back.

The biggest problem with carnauba in a professional setting is application control. ⚠️ Get it near trim, into crevices, around badges, or into any textured surface and you're spending significant time cleaning white residue out of spots that shouldn't have product on them in the first place. We actually had a car come in recently that still had old carnauba buildup from years prior worked into the trim and panel gaps. It cleans up, but it takes time and patience that shouldn't be necessary.

The durability argument sealed it for us. 🔬 4 to 8 weeks in Charlotte summer heat and humidity is just not enough for a professional service people are paying for. We moved to Koch Chemie Protector Wax for maintenance, The Last Coat Ceramic Wax and Rupes Advanced for longer lasting protection, and Gyeon Q2M Synchro for full ceramic packages. Better results, longer lasting, and none of the cleanup headaches. Traditional carnauba still has a place on show cars that live in garages, but for real world daily drivers it's been left behind.
