THE GOLDEN ERA OF JAPANESE LUXURY GT COUPÉS: 1990s PINNACLE 🇯🇵🇺🇸✨🏁

During the 1990s, Japan’s automakers weren’t just building sports cars—they were flexing their ultimate engineering might. They targeted the North American personal luxury coupé market with four completely distinct philosophies under the hood: an indestructible inline-six, a high-revving longitudinal V6, an aircraft-inspired flat-six boxer, and a sharp multi-link sports platform.

Four flagship Japanese grand tourers head-to-head:

🔹 1997 LEXUS SC300
The velvet sledgehammer. Designed in California by Calty Design, it shared its bulletproof chassis and iconic naturally aspirated 3.0L 2JZ-GE straight-six with the Mk4 Supra. Pure, silky RWD grand touring perfection.

🔹 1995 ACURA LEGEND COUPE LS
The executive outlaw. Famous for its silky Type II 3.2L V6 pushing 230 hp, available factory 6-speed manual, soft-close vacuum doors, and unmistakable 90s hip-hop and boardroom status.

🔹 1996 SUBARU SVX LSi
The spaceship. Styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro with its unforgettable aircraft-style "window-in-a-window" canopy. Powered by a silky 3.3L 24-valve Boxer-6 sending power to all four wheels via advanced AWD.

🔹 1995 NISSAN 300ZX 2+2 (Z32)
The timeless sculpture. Wrapping a naturally aspirated 3.0L 24-valve VG30DE V6 inside one of the most aerodynamic, wide-body silhouettes of the decade, featuring precision 4-wheel independent multi-link handling.

Four icons, four completely different powertrain layouts:

Two Japanese coupes. Two completely different ideas of what an affordable enthusiast car should be.

The 1985 Toyota Celica GT-S Liftback represented the traditional formula: engine up front, drive going to the rear, a practical liftback body and Toyota’s famously durable 2.4-liter 22R-E four-cylinder. With 116 hp and 140 lb-ft, it wasn’t a horsepower monster, but the combination of a 5-speed manual, RWD and everyday practicality made it a remarkably versatile 1980s coupe.

Then there was the 1985 Honda Prelude Si. Honda went in another direction entirely. Its fuel-injected 2.0-liter four produced 110 hp and 114 lb-ft, driving the front wheels through a 5-speed manual. The Prelude emphasized a low seating position, compact dimensions, sharp handling and Honda’s increasingly sophisticated engineering.

What makes this matchup especially interesting is that their outputs were remarkably close, yet their personalities were fundamentally different: Celica GT-S — 2.4L, RWD, liftback practicality. Prelude Si — 2.0L, FWD, low-slung sports-coupe character.

Nearly four decades later, neither needs huge horsepower to be desirable. They're reminders of an era when a lightweight chassis, manual gearbox, simple naturally aspirated engine and usable interior could make an everyday coupe genuinely entertaining.

Which one would you daily today — Celica GT-S or Prelude Si?

Six generations. More than four decades. One name that never really forgot what it was built for.

The Toyota 4Runner started in 1984 as something wonderfully simple — essentially a Toyota pickup transformed into an adventure vehicle, complete with a removable rear top and unmistakably utilitarian roots.

Then it evolved.

The second generation became a more conventional SUV.
The third added refinement without abandoning the trail.
The fourth even brought V8 power into the formula.
The fifth generation became one of Toyota’s longest-running modern 4x4 designs.
And now the sixth-generation 4Runner carries the name onto Toyota’s modern TNGA-F platform.

Different engines, different technology, different dimensions — but the basic idea survived:

body-on-frame construction, real 4x4 capability and a vehicle designed to keep going when the pavement ends.

Looking at all six together also shows just how much the 4Runner has grown without losing that recognizable Toyota off-road DNA.

Which generation is peak 4Runner for you?

1st — the original pickup-based classic
2nd — old-school 90s Toyota
3rd — arguably the sweet spot
4th — V8 era
5th — modern legend
6th — the new chapter

Rosie posing with her brand new Formula, back in 1977. Her father bought her the car when she turned 16. So yes, this is definitely an “original owner” story! The Formula endured over the years, and now it’s back, new again. A wonderful story all-around!
