βποΈ THIS MOUNTAIN LOOKS LIKE EARTH FORGOT TO FINISH BUILDING IT.
β
βRising nearly 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) above sea level on the border region of Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil, Mount Roraima looks less like an ordinary mountain and more like a giant stone island floating above the clouds. Its enormous flat summit stretches across roughly 30 square kilometers, surrounded by towering cliffs, waterfalls and misty landscapes that look almost unreal.
β
βRoraima is part of the ancient Pakaraima mountain range, and its rocks date back roughly 1.8 billion years - long before dinosaurs, humans, or even complex life as we know it existed. Its tabletop shape was carved over immense spans of geological time through erosion and weathering, leaving behind those almost perfectly vertical cliffs.
β
βBut the landscape isnβt just spectacular, itβs biologically unusual. The isolated summit has its own unique ecosystem, including plants and animals found nowhere else on Earth. Some species have evolved in isolation for so long that Roraima has become a living laboratory for scientists studying evolution and biodiversity.
β
βAnd then thereβs the atmosphere. Clouds constantly roll across the plateau. Water tumbles from its cliffs. Strange rock formations rise from the mist. Standing there can feel less like visiting a mountain and more like stepping onto another planet.
β
βMount Roraima isnβt a lost civilization or a giant petrified structure. The real mystery is even more incredible: this ancient landscape has survived for billions of years while the world around it completely changed. πποΈ
