Greg Biffle, NASCAR Champion, Wife Cristina, and Two Children Among Six Killed in North Carolina Plane Crash
Greg Biffle, a celebrated NASCAR champion whose grit, talent, and generosity defined a distinguished career on and off the racetrack, died Thursday morning in a tragic private plane crash in North Carolina. He was 55. Also lost in the crash were his wife, Cristina Grossu Biffle; their young son, Ryder; his teenage daughter, Emma; and two others whose lives were cut short in the devastating accident.
Authorities confirmed that the private business aircraft, owned by Biffle, went down around 10:20 a.m. near the Lakewood Golf Club in Iredell County, erupting into flames upon impact. All six people aboard the plane were killed. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Born with a fierce competitive spirit and an unwavering work ethic, Greg Biffle rose from humble beginnings to become one of NASCAR’s most accomplished drivers. Over the course of his career, he captured championships in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series, and became a perennial contender at the sport’s highest level. Known for his fearlessness behind the wheel and his steady professionalism, Biffle earned the respect of competitors and fans alike, thrilling millions with his determination and skill.
Yet those closest to him say his greatest pride was not found in trophies or checkered flags, but in his family. He married Cristina Grossu in 2023, and together they shared a life rooted in love, faith, and service to others. Their five-year-old son Ryder was the center of Greg’s world, while his daughter Emma, 14, whom he shared with former wife Nicole Lunders, was a constant source of joy and pride.
Friends and family described the Biffles as deeply compassionate people who lived with purpose. Congressman Richard Hudson, a family friend, remembered Greg as “an extraordinary person” whose legacy extended far beyond racing. Longtime friend Garrett Mitchell, known to many as Cleetus McFarland, shared that the family had been traveling to spend time with friends—an ordinary, joyful plan that makes the loss all the more heartbreaking.
Those who knew Greg speak of a man who never forgot where he came from, who quietly helped others, mentored younger drivers, and gave back to his community with little fanfare. He was a champion in competition, but equally in character.
The sudden loss of Greg, Cristina, Ryder, and Emma has sent shockwaves through the racing community and beyond. Tributes poured in from fans, fellow drivers, and friends who remember not only what Greg accomplished, but who he was—a devoted father, a loving husband, and a man who lived boldly and generously.
As investigations continue, the focus remains on honoring the lives lost and supporting those left behind. Greg Biffle’s legacy will endure in the history of motorsports, in the memories of those he inspired, and in the love he shared with his family.
He will be remembered not just for his fearlessness on the track, but for the heart he carried through life.
