There are thousands of first generation 1967-’69 Camaros, but this is the car that turned the motorsports world on its head. In doing so, Big Red played a huge role in restoring glory to American Muscle cars. Big Red is heralded as the mother of all pro touring street machines. She’s a piece of cultural history whose name is synonymous with devastatingly brutal top speed - holding records at La Ca

rrera Classica, Silver State Classic Challenge, and Road & Track Magazine’s Ultimate Street Car Shootout, just to name a few.

Today we celebrate the life of Lorna Ward on what would’ve been her birthday.
Lorna brought so much kindness, warmth, and heart to the Big Red family, and her presence is deeply missed every day. We’re forever grateful for the memories, laughter, and love she shared with all of us.

Happy Birthday, Lorna. ❤️🏁

266 mph on the flats is one thing.
22 turns and 1,200 feet of elevation gain is a whole different animal. 🏔️
The Virginia City Hill Climb, nicknamed the "Nürburgring of Nevada", spans 5.2 miles of open highway with 22 sharp turns and a brutal climb. Most cars are built for one discipline. Big Red showed up and conquered another one — swapping to a more nimble 540 engine just for the twisties.

In 2011, Big Red finished 5th overall with a time of 3:29.99 and a top speed of 138 mph. Fast on the salt. Fast in the mountains. Just… fast.

Built in 1987. Crashed. Rebuilt. Banned from races for being too fast. Sat in a museum. Came back. Caught fire. Rebuilt again. Set records on salt flats, highways, and mountains.
Still going. Still the fastest '69 Camaro alive. 🔴

This was never just about going fast. 🏁
RJ Gottlieb said it best: "I wasn't looking to make a name for myself in racing, it was just something I was passionate about." A father and son project in 1987 became a 35-year legacy.
Big Red isn't just a race car — it's a family story told at 200mph.

Most people see the car. Few know the guy underneath it. 🔧🔴

Mark Ewing grew up around racing, eventually found his way into Bill Osborne's shop, the same man who built Big Red's chassis.

When the racing schedule picked up, he walked away from a 35-year career to come back to California and work full time on Big Red. Head mechanic. Crew chief. The guy who keeps 1,750 horsepower alive event after event.

Most race cars hide behind the specs.
Big Red hides the specs behind a stock body.

Full race tube chassis. Koni coilovers. Six-piston Baer brakes. Ford 9-inch floater rear. All tucked underneath what looks like a factory '69 Camaro. The Gottliebs called it "capturing the middle ground." We call it diabolical.

The legend got the feature it deserves.
Big Red at Willow Springs, doing what it does best while the Donut crew tried to wrap their heads around the fact that this thing is a '69 Camaro. A real one. With windows that roll down. That also runs 266 mph.
Go watch the full video on the Donut Media YouTube channel and see the car through fresh eyes. If you're new here — welcome. You're going to want to stay a while. 🙌

In 1987, Dan & RJ Gottlieb set out to create something that could eat European exotics for breakfast. Thirty-five years later, the legend is still hungry.
