The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb known as "The Race to the Clouds" has been running since 1916, attracting the best drivers in the world to summit America's Mountain. Big Red showed up anyway.

Purpose-specific tuning resulted in an 11:08.357 run to the clouds, placing Big Red fourth in the Pikes Peak Open Class. From flat-out Nevada straightaways to a mountain with no guardrails and no mercy — Big Red does it all.

You point the car in a straight line and find out exactly what you and your machine are made of. Big Red showed up to Bonneville Speed Week 2018 powered by a supercharged 555ci big-block making 1,750 horsepower and 1,250 lb-ft of torque — and set a new AA/CBFALT class record at 258.596 mph. The exit speed on the record run was clocked at over 270 mph.

After a 29-year run without a complete rebuild, the team spent six months tearing Big Red down to nothing and putting it back together — every single component rebuilt, updated, or replaced. Then a fuel fitting vibrated loose during a test session and the car went up in flames. By April 2017 the car was ready again, and promptly broke its own record at the Mojave Mile with a 253.7 mph run — then finally made it to Pikes Peak. Some cars just refuse to die.

Dave Ward (crew chief), Mark Ewing (head mechanic), and Larry Mollicone (engine builder) are the backbone of every record run. Dave joined the team in 1989 and has spent over 35 years as master fabricator, planner, and crew chief — handling everything from logistics to race setup. Larry builds engines the way Michelangelo created art — obsessed with perfection — developing four distinctly different engines ranging from 850 to a mind-numbing 1,900 horsepower. Behind every 266 mph pass is a crew that's been at it for decades. The car is the legend. The team is the reason.

22 turns and 1,200 feet of elevation gain is a whole different animal. 🏔️
The Virginia City Hill Climb, nicknamed the "Nürburgring of Nevada", spans 5.2 miles of open highway with 22 sharp turns and a brutal climb. Most cars are built for one discipline. Big Red showed up and conquered another one — swapping to a more nimble 540 engine just for the twisties.

In 2011, Big Red finished 5th overall with a time of 3:29.99 and a top speed of 138 mph. Fast on the salt. Fast in the mountains. Just… fast.
