Jim Moylan, a 30-year veteran of Ford Motor Company, passed away on December 11, 2025, at the age of 80 in Naples, Florida—leaving behind a legacy millions of drivers experience every single day.

In 1986, after getting drenched while refueling a company car in the rain, Moylan came up with a simple yet brilliant solution: add a small triangular arrow next to the fuel pump icon on the dashboard to indicate which side the fuel door is on. That tiny design tweak first appeared on the Ford Es**rt in 1989.

The idea spread rapidly across the automotive industry and eventually became a global standard—quietly eliminating one of the most common everyday driving frustrations.
