π€π Boating Safety on Weiss Lake β July 4th Holiday
As we celebrate Independence Day, Cherokee County EMA reminds all residents and visitors to stay safe while boating on Weiss Lake.
Increased boat traffic, nighttime visibility issues, and holiday excitement can create dangerous conditions if precautions are not taken.
β οΈ Top Boating Safety Reminders for July 4th:
π§ββοΈ Wear a Life Jacket β Always
Ensure everyone on board wears a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket. Children under 8 years old are required by law to wear a life jacket at all times while on a vessel.
π₯οΈ Avoid Boating Under the Influence
Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal and extremely dangerous. Designate a sober boat operator β just like a designated driver.
π¦ Follow Navigation Rules & Local Laws
Maintain a safe speed, especially in crowded areas and at night. Know no-wake zones and stay alert for swimmers, kayakers, and paddleboarders. Display proper navigation lights after sunset.
π§― Be Prepared & Equipped
Check that your boat is stocked with required safety gear (life jackets, fire extinguisher, whistle/horn, lights, etc.). Have a charged phone or marine radio to contact help if needed.Inspect your fuel, engine, and battery before heading out.
π Extra Caution for Fireworks Night
Expect heavy congestion on the water near fireworks viewing areas. Anchor early if you're watching fireworks by boat. Keep your lights on, and avoid sudden movement or crossing paths with other vessels in the dark.
