⛽ DID YOU KNOW? What's the deal with that extra 9/10¢?

Ever noticed that gasoline prices almost always end in 9/10 of a cent? It's something we've been seeing at gas stations for generations, but have you ever wondered why?

Believe it or not, the tradition dates back to the 1930s!

During the Great Depression, gasoline was much cheaper than it is today, and even a fraction of a penny could make a difference. Federal gasoline taxes were also introduced in 1932, adding to the importance of small price differences.

Rather than always adjusting prices by a full penny, gas stations could price fuel in fractions of a cent per gallon. Eventually, the familiar 9/10¢ became an industry tradition.
So why do we still use it today? 🤔

Mostly because it's become an established pricing convention. It also makes a price such as $3.49⁹⁄₁₀ appear slightly lower than $3.50, even though the difference is just one-tenth of a cent per gallon.

And here's another interesting fact: That extra 9/10¢ isn't a separate fee! It's simply part of the advertised price per gallon.

So the next time you stop by Kemper Fuels, take a peek at the price sign. You're looking at a little piece of American gasoline history that's been around for nearly a century!
