It was an incredible Halloween afternoon aboard the American Star with 2 humpback whales, one of which was lunge feeding less than 300 yards from the shoreline! We also sighted bottlenose dolphins, Northern Gannets, Loons, and Bald Eagles. Join us for another gorgeous afternoon tomorrow at 1:30pm!

North Atlantic Right whales are on the move! Calvin (Catalog #2223) is a female North Atlantic right whale born in 1992 and named after the comic strip character Calvin and Hobbes. She has survived multiple fishing gear entanglements and has given birth to four known calves. Maybe we will see a 5th this upcoming season!? 🍼🤞🏻
Right whales are an endangered species with approximately 380 individuals remaining, with less than 70 reproductively active females. The mandatory Seasonal Management Area (SMA) off Cape May begins on November 1, requiring vessels 65 feet or larger to travel at speeds of 10 knots or less to reduce the risk of vessel strikes.
You can report Right whale sightings to 1-877-WHALE-HELP (877-942-5343), to the United States Coast Guard on VHF Channel 16, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center, and the Whale Alert app.

Some of our Cape May Whale Watch & Research Center team just returned from Puerto Rico where they attended the Society for Marine Mammalogy's Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals!
This international conference of 1,600 attendees from 77 countries brought together marine mammal scientists and researchers from around the world! One Ocean, One Future…and one very happy ending! 🇵🇷🐾
Our team traveled to Puerto Rico to present our research and attend the Society for Marine Mammalogy's international conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals, where Society for Marine Mammalogy shared an opportunity for attendees to volunteer as Flight Angels!
Meet Magic! 🐶 Originally found in the ocean and nicknamed Ariel (Ari), Magic spent seven months in foster care through for Satos Rescue before our crew accompanied her on a flight to her forever home in New Jersey!

Photo highlights from Wednesday (4 Humpback whales) and Thursday (1 Humpback whale) 🐋 Each day was filled with excitement with large pods of Bottlenose dolphins passing through the areas where the whales were and riding the swells and rostrums of the whales! We are seeing more large flocks of cormorants and scoters as migration continues and more Northern gannets every day!

This Humpback whale was giving us a round of applause for following all regional whale watching guidelines! Whale SENSE 🐋👏
For FIVE minutes straight, this whale repeatedly slapped its long white pectoral fins against the surface while two other whales were nearby! Humpback whales have the longest pectoral fins of any other cetacean, reaching up to one-third of their total body length! When you view wildlife respectfully, you are often rewarded with amazing encounters 💙

Have you ever wondered what its like to join a pelagic trip off Cape May? While many of us are familiar with the marine life found along our coastline, the pelagic environment holds an incredible diversity of wildlife that is often under explored. Through our research and pelagic trips aboard the American Star, we have the opportunity to explore these pelagic waters and share this experience with others. Thank you to Cape May Magazine for giving us the opportunity to highlight this fascinating part of Cape May's ecosystem!
