THE MARINE INDUSTRY NEEDS TO HAVE A SERIOUS CONVERSATION ABOUT SURFACE PROTECTION.
Next week, we’re going to challenge some long-standing beliefs about maintaining and protecting yacht paint and gelcoat systems.
After 14 years in marine surface correction and restoration, one thing has become increasingly clear: Too many vessels are being maintained without a proper understanding of the coating systems they’re trying to protect.
Captains and management companies are spending substantial amounts on maintenance, but are they actually preserving the underlying surfaces?
We’re going to dig into the technical data behind:
• Paint vs. gelcoat: Why these systems require fundamentally different maintenance approaches.
• Ceramic coatings: Their legitimate benefits, their limitations, and what happens when it’s time to reapply them years later.
• Long-term protection: Are we extending the service life of the underlying coating or simply improving its appearance?
• Maintenance practices: How improper chemicals, aggressive cleaning, contamination buildup, and repeated surface correction can affect coating longevity.
• The real cost: Initial application versus ongoing maintenance, future surface preparation, reapplication, and eventual repainting.
Here’s something worth considering:
The International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) developed specific guidance addressing ceramic coating compatibility, maintenance, removal, and verification before repainting.
If ceramic protection were as straightforward as some marketing suggests, why would the industry need detailed guidance on safely removing it?
Ceramic coatings absolutely have their place. But hydrophobic performance, gloss, and impressive water beading do not automatically tell us the condition of the underlying paint or gelcoat.
We’re going to separate marketing claims from measurable performance and discuss what captains, yacht managers, and owners should actually be monitoring.
This isn’t about selling another protection product. It’s about protecting the coating system underneath it.
Next week, we’re challenging the conversation surrounding ceramic coatings and marine surface protection.

Let’s talk facts.
