Susan Oliver, Our Very Own Resident Bird Photographer, Places in “Top 100” in National Audubon Society’s Annual Photography Contest.
We are so proud to announce that Cape Coral photographer Susan Oliver’s entry “Cathedral in Cypress” was selected from thousands of entries. The photograph of a female Anhinga was taken in Lakeland, Florida and showcases not only the bird, but also the wild beauty of the landscape.
Says Susan: “Before Hurricane Ian changed much of the landscape at Florida’s Circle B Bar Reserve, there was a stretch along Alligator Alley near Lake Hancock that I referred to as the “Bird Photography Studio.” The light filtered beautifully through the cypress trees, and the draping Spanish moss created a soft backdrop for any bird that perched there. On this walk, it was a female Anhinga that stopped me. While the striking black plumage of the males often draw attention, I was captivated by the subtle elegance of the female’s buff-colored neck and the curve she formed against the moss. I have noticed that photographers frequently walk past Anhingas, especially the females. I wanted the image to show the quiet elegance of a bird that is often overlooked.”
It’s easy to think that photographers get shots like this because they “happen” to be in the right place at the right time. But that’s only because they put themselves in that right place and right time. They research, study, track behavior patterns, sunrise and sunset times, weather conditions and wait. But that’s just part of getting the shot. They understand lighting, depth of field, shutter speed and all the other technical considerations that ultimately give them a shot like “Cathedral in Cypress.” Susan herself has been studying and taking photographs of wildlife for more than 16 years.
And another reason we are so proud of Susan: Bird photographers are the ultimate conservationists. Their insights enable organizations – especially the Audubon Society – to focus on the changes that impact these incredible birds and hopefully help “bend the bird curve” to keep their habitats safe. We applaud her efforts in that endeavor.
Visit us at Harbour View Gallery in Cape Coral to see more of Susan’s emotionally moving work.
Congratulation, Susan!!!!

MEET OUR OCTOBER FEATURED 2D ARTIST: RACHEL HOLMES!

Harbour View Gallery is delighted to feature Rachel Holmes as our Featured 2D Artist for the month of October!

Based right here in Cape Coral, Florida, Rachel’s artistic journey began across the Atlantic. Originally from England, she made her way to Texas before eventually discovering a new home — and a new source of inspiration — right here in Southwest Florida.

After moving to Florida in 2022, Rachel quickly fell in love with the region’s vivid landscapes, fascinating wildlife, and quiet coastal beauty. Manatees, mangroves, shorebirds, sunsets, and the ever-changing rhythms of coastal life have all found their way onto her canvases.

With 20 years of painting experience and three years of dedicated fine-art practice, Rachel brings fresh eyes to the Florida landscape. Her subjects — and the way she paints them — are guided by the changing rhythms, ebb and flow, light, and life that surround her.

Her work explores coastal habitats, shorebirds, brilliant sunsets, and even her two cats, who have become some of her most unexpected and beloved muses.

Rachel paints with a simple but powerful goal: to spark joy, make people smile, and share the sense of wonder she feels for the living creatures and landscapes of her adopted home.

Through her art, she hopes to inspire, delight, and encourage us to slow down and find connection and meaning in the everyday creatures and beautiful places that surround us.

Come experience Rachel’s work throughout October at Harbour View Gallery!

And we invite you to join us for a special evening celebrating Rachel and her beautiful work:

MEET OUR OCTOBER FEATURED ARTIST: SHARON TONDREAU!

We are thrilled to celebrate our very own Sharon Tondreau as Harbour View Gallery’s Featured 3D Artist for the month of October!

Sharon’s artistic journey began with a beloved Pine Island tradition — painting coconuts to look like fish. Sharon wanted to take part in the tradition, so she painted her first coconut fish. But as she worked, she fell in love with the process of smoothing the coconut’s surface and transforming it into something completely new.

And Sharon didn’t stop there!

Using durable air-dry clay, she began adding fins, tails, and expressive faces to her coconut creations. Then came the bright colors, playful patterns, and unmistakable tropical personality that make each of her pieces so much fun.

Every Sharon Tondreau creation is handmade from start to finish and completely one of a kind.

And while fish may have been where it all began, Sharon’s imagination has taken her well beyond the reef! She has transformed the traditional coconut fish into pigs, cats, dogs, parrots, bears, and other wonderfully whimsical creatures — making her work a favorite among animal lovers and fish lovers alike.

Come see Sharon’s colorful creations throughout October at Harbour View Gallery!

And please join us for a special evening celebrating Sharon:
