In March 2026, scientists studying Great Salt Lake uncovered something unexpected-a massive freshwater system extending deep beneath one of the saltiest bodies of water in North America. Using airborne electromagnetic surveys, researchers mapped underground structures and found fresh water reaching depths of up to 4 kilometers.
What makes this discovery so striking is the contrast. The lake itself is extremely saline, yet beneath it lies a vast reserve of fresh water trapped within rock formations. By measuring differences in electrical conductivity, scientists were able to distinguish between saltwater and freshwater layers hidden far below the surface.
The scale of this system appears much larger than previously understood, suggesting that significant volumes of freshwater have remained undetected until now. This reshapes how scientists view the region's underground hydrology and its connection to surface water systems.
