I feel compelled to speak up in order to move forward. Having lived on this mountain for almost 40 years, I have never felt as disappointed and disheartened by an event as I do now. This entire process has been incredibly discouraging, as it felt like we were up against forces beyond our control. During this time, one neighbors went as far as to threaten to sue my mom, the property owner—who is in her 70s—with absolutely no legal grounds. What’s even more frustrating is that this same neighbor initially met us at the proposed site, agreed that the fence and track location were not an issue, and then later, at the town board meeting, claimed he had never been consulted. To add insult to injury, after being called out on this false statement, he somewhat backtracked and acknowledged our gentlemen’s agreement.
One particular neighbor, who lives on the same road as the track with his girlfriend, doesn’t even pay taxes in the Town of Candor. This man had the audacity to state at the town board meeting that the track owner/operators "don’t even own their land or pay taxes." As proud, hard-working property owners and taxpayers in Candor, we were deeply offended by this ignorant and irrelevant statement made in a public forum. At the end of the day, the stress just isn’t worth it.
Of the seven homes on the road where the track is located, only two signed a petition against it. The other five—who live closer to the track than the complainers—signed in support. For the record, we also received signatures from all but four residents on Tuttle Hill in support of Adrenaline Mountain Kartway. A huge THANK YOU to everyone who signed in support! It was wonderful to see you when I stopped by, and your support means the world to us.
They say stress can kill you, and honestly, it just isn’t worth it. It may seem like we’re giving up too easily, but the ripple effect of all this drama has been emotionally and mentally draining. We followed every step of the town’s process without receiving any formal complaints last year, yet we were still forced to apply for a new permit instead of simply renewing our existing one due to a few complaints. Even if we had started the permit process for a new track, the complainers would have fought us at every turn on every waiver request. And even if, by some miracle, we had been granted a permit, they would have watched us with binoculars, timed everything to the minute, and stripped away all the joy from something that brought so much happiness, community, and connection. It brought me such immense joy to see the kids racing and playing together—it was truly a beautiful sight to behold.
I will continue to support the karting community, but I just wish we could have done so directly at Adrenaline Mountain Kartway.
