25 YEARS LATER, WE WILL NEVER FORGET
Today, on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, we pause at 7:46 a.m. (CST) to remember the lives lost in New York City, at the Pentagon, and aboard Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Where were you 25 years ago today?
Many of us can still remember exactly where we were when we first heard the news. We remember the shock, the fear, the heartbreak, and the uncertainty. But we also remember what followed. Communities came together. Strangers helped one another. First responders ran toward danger. Americans stood united in support of their fellow citizens and their nation.
As we commemorate America’s 250th year, may we remember that unity, compassion, courage, and commitment are not values reserved only for moments of tragedy. They are principles we should strive to demonstrate every day as neighbors, communities, and citizens.
Many members of the Merkel Police Department are military veterans, including some who served during the difficult years that followed the attacks. For them, and for all of us, September 11 carries a deeply personal meaning. We remember the loss and pain our nation felt that fateful day. We also remember why we are here: to serve, protect, and stand beside our community.
Today, we honor every man and woman who made the ultimate sacrifice on September 11, 2001. We also remember those we lost in the days, weeks, months, and years that followed, including first responders, members of our Armed Forces, and all whose lives were forever changed through service and sacrifice.
We invite you to share where you were on September 11, 2001, and what you remember most about the way your family, community, or our nation came together.
May we never forget their sacrifice. May we never take our unity for granted. May we always remain committed to serving one another.
