The manual is as old as the car itself 📜

In 1889, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach built the Stahlradwagen, the "steel wheeled car." It ran a tiny 565 cc V twin making about 1.3 horsepower, and it shifted through a four speed gearwheel transmission.
No synchros, no power steering, no screens. Just gears, a lever, and a driver who knew what they were doing.

That whine when you back up isn't your transmission dying 🔊

Your forward gears are helical, cut at an angle, so the teeth mesh gradually and run quietly. Many manuals use straight cut gears for reverse instead. Each tooth hits all at once across its full face, and that's the whine you hear.

Why do automakers do it? Straight cut gears are cheaper to make and don't push sideways on their shafts. And since you only reverse slowly and for a few seconds, the noise isn't worth engineering out.

Bonus: reverse often has no synchro, which is why it grinds if you shift in while still rolling. Come to a full stop, clutch in, wait a second, then shift.

The 2027 GR86 still comes with three pedals, and not as a pricey add on 🙌

Toyota offers the 6 speed manual on both grades, base and Premium. For 2027 they even tweaked the shifter so the 5th to 4th downshift feels better. Most automakers are dropping manuals, and Toyota is still refining one.

Affordable, rear wheel drive, and a manual on every trim. This is how you keep the manual alive.

Many a k truck don't even have five gears, maybe in that situation I would have been using first gear.

Just feel bad neglecting a whole gear really two.

Although she's such a small little billy goat, she has a ton of torque, and most everyday situations don't need all that twerking.

These little rings are why your shifts don't grind 🔧

Every gear in a manual car spins at its own speed. Before the gear can lock in, a synchronizer ring presses against a cone on that gear. The friction speeds it up or slows it down until everything matches. Then the gear slides in quietly.

Brass rings are the classic. Many performance gearboxes now use carbon lined rings, which grip harder and hold up better to fast shifts.

Pro tip: if you force the shifter, the synchros can't keep up, and that's when you hear the grind. A smooth, steady push lets them do their job.

Before 1928, shifting a manual meant double clutching and matching gears by ear. Miss it and you got a loud grind from the gearbox.

Then Cadillac introduced Synchro-Mesh for its 1929 models. Synchronizers matched the gear speeds for you, so shifts got quieter, smoother, and a lot more forgiving. Nearly a century later, the synchros in your gearbox still do the same basic job.
