Do you drive a GM vehicle with Auto 4WD? If we've serviced it this week, some clients may notice that we've switched their truck from "Auto" back into two wheel drive. Why? Auto 4WD isn't really meant to be used during warm weeks like this one, when all the road are dry. Let us explain!

When you shift your truck into four wheel drive, two things happen:
1) Your transfer case clutch engages and starts sending power to the front propeller shaft as well; not just the rear one.
2) Your front differential actuator locks in, connecting the front wheels together and connecting them to the front propeller shaft.

In Auto 4WD, your transfer case is usually disengaged but your front differential remains locked in all the time. That way, it's always ready so a quick application of the transfer case clutch will seamlessly send power to your front wheels. While driving around with your front differential engaged all the time won't cause anything to break, it will cause:
⚙️ Increased wear inside the front differential and of the front propeller shaft.
⚙️ Reduced fuel economy due to the drag of turning these extra parts.
⚙️ Some tightness and noise when making sharp turns, such as in a parking lot.

Want your four wheel drive parts to last as long as possible? Switch to the "2 High" position on dry days and save Auto 4WD for wet or snowy days when you may actually need the grip.
