Steam is a great detailing tool when it’s used with control.

Into a microfiber and wipe control.
Heat transferred through a folded microfiber bonnet control.
Short, targeted steam where appropriate control.

Saturating a door panel with unrestricted steam? That’s not control.

The goal isn’t to eliminate steam. It’s to control the heat, moisture, distance and application based on the material you’re working on.

Steam provides the heat. The microfiber helps control how that heat and moisture reach the surface.

Whether you’re a detailer or a vehicle owner, the process matters. Proper technique isn’t just about getting a surface clean, it’s about protecting the integrity of the vehicle while doing it.

Control the process. Protect the client’s investment.

I wanted to actually test the difference in product usage instead of just guessing.

With the soak-and-spray method, I used over 3 ounces of product and would not have been able to complete the entire vehicle with the 6 ounces I started with.

With the pump foamer and controlled spray-to-pad application, I used approximately 2 ounces and could have completed the entire vehicle, including all the seats and plastics, for approximately 33 cents in product.

The soak-and-spray method would have required additional product just to finish the vehicle, increasing the overall product cost.

Same vehicle. Same product. Same cleaning objective. Different application method.

Controlled application means less overspray, less unnecessary product use, better control around the materials you’re working on, and better control of your operating costs and profit margins.

Know your products. Understand their performance. Test your processes.

This is how our industry gets better.

A detailer shared his firsthand experience of burning and discoloring plastics when combining wet chemicals with steam—and, more importantly, he learned from it and changed his process.

That’s worth sharing.

As detailers, we need to understand the materials we’re working on, control our chemical application, and recognize that seeing a process repeated on social media doesn’t automatically make it a safe process.

Learn from experience. Share the knowledge. Protect the integrity of the client’s vehicle.

Don’t steam over wet chemicals. Don’t compound the risk. Clean without inviting trouble.

Wheel cleaning starts with the right chemistry and the right process.

Alkaline Wheel Cleaner for the wheels, Active Foam on the tires with proper dwell time, then Multi Star during the pre-soak to add another layer of cleaning power where needed.

Every product has a purpose. Every step has a reason.

Controlled application. Proper dwell time. Let the chemistry do the work.

A few minutes spent inspecting a vehicle before you begin can save a lot of questions later.

Pre-existing damage should be identified, documented, and communicated to the owner before the detailing process starts.

It’s about transparency, professionalism, and protecting both the client and your business.

Before cleaning any interior, take a few minutes to inspect the vehicle properly and use a light.

Never blindly reach into an area you can’t clearly see. What you find during that inspection could prevent an injury.

Inspection isn’t wasted time. It’s part of the process.

Steam is a great tool but more heat and moisture doesn’t always mean better cleaning.

Know the materials you’re working on. Know the manufacturer’s recommendations. And always consider how your process could affect the vehicle not just today, but over time.

Getting it clean is only part of the job. Protecting the integrity of the client’s vehicle is the priority.
