A true piece of motorsport history!
The legendary Mazda RX-792B made an unforgettable appearance at Gridlife Laguna
Powered by a 2.6L naturally aspirated R26B 4-rotor engine, closely related to the iconic Le Mans-winning Mazda 787B, this machine pushed roughly 690 horsepower at 9,000–10,000 RPM, paired with a 5-speed gearbox.
With only three chassis ever built, the RX-792B remains one of Mazda’s rarest race cars. Despite battling reliability issues, fires, and fierce competition from Nissan and Toyota in the IMSA GTP series, it managed an impressive second-place finish at Watkins Glen.
Mazda ultimately pulled the plug on the program in December 1992, bringing an end to this incredible chapter of rotary-powered racing.
Over 30 years later, the RX-792B is still turning heads and reminding everyone why Mazda’s rotary racing heritage is so legendary.
Getting to see and hear this piece of history at Laguna Seca was something special!
