February 22, 1907: The first taxicabs began operating in London.

February 22, 1959: First running of the Daytona 500 at the Daytona International Speedway. It was a field of 59 cars with over 41,000 people in attendance. The race was caution-free and considered a “perfect game” in NASCAR history. Lee Petty won the race in a 1959 Oldsmobile.

February 23, 1967: Pontiac introduced the Firebird. It featured new styling and was available in hardtop coupe or convertible. Pricing began at $2,660. The Firebird was in production until 2002 and was at the forefront of America’s muscle car generation.

February 26, 1944: The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) was incorporated in Boston.

February 16, 1852: H & C Studebaker is founded by Henry and Clement Studebaker in South Bend, IN. First a blacksmith and wagon business, they converted to car making in 1902.

February 18, 2001: Dale Earnhardt died in the last lap of the Daytona 500. Earnhardt was a seven time Winston Cup Champion. He was only 49 years old.

February 20, 1954: Ford unveils the Thunderbird at the Detroit Auto Show. The Thunderbird went on sale in October as a 1955 model and sold 3,500 in the first ten days.
