Invest in the driver—not just the license.

For a new driver, a traffic ticket can mean more than simply paying a fine. Depending on the violation, it may also mean points on your driving record, increased insurance costs, or even losing your driving privileges.

Colorado’s point system is especially important for young drivers to understand because the number of points that can trigger a suspension varies by age.

You may also be required or given the option to complete a defensive driving course. Depending on the court and circumstances, an approved course may be part of an agreement to reduce points, lower a fine, or otherwise resolve the ticket.

⚠️ But don’t sign up for a course on your own and assume it will help your ticket. Requirements and options vary by court, so always contact the court listed on your citation first before your court date and ask if they allow a defensive driving course or traffic school option for your specific speeding violation.

The best strategy? Know the rules, build safe driving habits, and remember that one traffic ticket can have consequences beyond the fine.

Reduced visibility, glare from headlights, harder-to-see pedestrians and cyclists, and fatigue can all make nighttime driving more demanding. And here in Colorado, there’s another important factor: wildlife. 🦌

Fall is an especially active time for deer and other wildlife, and animals can appear on or near the roadway with very little warning—particularly around dawn, dusk and after dark.

For new drivers, the best way to get comfortable at night is practice. Start on familiar roads, reduce distractions, scan beyond your headlights, watch for wildlife, and slow down when visibility is limited.

Parents: Don’t let your teen’s first solo drive at night be their first real experience driving after dark. Colorado teens are required to log at least 50 hours of supervised driving practice before getting their license, including a minimum of 10 hours at night. Use those nighttime hours to help them gain experience and confidence while you’re still in the passenger seat. 🚗🌙

"How fast over the speed limit can I go without getting a ticket?"

It's one of the most common questions we hear from new drivers.

The answer? There is no "5 mph rule."

The posted speed limit is the maximum legal speed under ideal driving conditions. Law enforcement officers can issue a citation for driving over the posted speed limit, and safe driving sometimes means traveling below the speed limit when weather, traffic, or road conditions require it.

The best drivers don't aim to avoid tickets, they aim to make safe decisions every time they get behind the wheel.
