Last weekend, the desert off road racing community watched as some of the most successful, and respected racers stopped their race by their own choice, to care for, and treat a fellow racer with respect and dignity in a critical situation. This is the view that will forever be an image in my mind.
Last night however, just a week later, racers seemed to forget compassion and concern for a fellow racer. Nearly an hour for us to find a downed rider with only one racer reporting to a checkpoint “ a racer is down in bad shape a mile or two back”. No additional location. He gave us a name, but no better location.
With a course that crossed a road about 6 times, we responded and got to the general area while sweep riders rode the course. Not one additional report. Not one person stopped to say a word.
Nearly an hour later I found him sitting in the dirt alone not knowing which way was up or how he got there. Where he was at, I easily watched 20 plus racers go by and come past me seconds later. None said a thing.
We will ignore the fact that this particular racers family has done more for motorcycle racing in Nevada than just about anyone out there. It shouldn’t matter because everyone deserves concern and compassion from their fellow racers.
Everyone.
I promise you this- Not a single person in the world cares Monday morning that you got 2nd place in the 30-32 year olds on a blue bike with pink grips class. Not one. Be the best human you can and show every racer the dignity and respect they deserve. We don’t care if every racer stops to tell us where someone is. There is never too much information. Lets do better.
